What sort of mental health issues/childhood abuse stories do the women who stay in those relationships have? Exactly. CAIS (and PAIS) is literally a male intersex condition. People who have it might be raised as girls and externally appear female but they are factually male. They have internal testes and are incapable genetically of female reproductive function. They are completely non-virilised males. A more useful definition of sex focuses on the SRY gene, not on genitals and not (strictly) on chromosomes.

If someone's SRY gene cannot do its job, either because it naturally doesn't exist (in normal XX females), it's mangled somehow, or if its effects physically cannot take hold (as in CAIS people), then it's a legitimate position to argue that person is literally a biological female.
