"POC" getting buttmad about name mispronunciation has to do with their culture and identity being disregarded, disrespected, and dismissed by the dominant culture. It's nothing like someone being unable to pronounce your Italian last name, lol. And anyway, complaints about it are pretty rich coming from someone who changes their own name every 15 seconds and so obviously has zero identification with it.

What that he said that is ableist?! I either don't understand the concept or she is broadening the meaning of this word. Does she mean that what he is saying is victim blaiming, and victim blaming is ableist? I don't think that falls under the definition of the word ableist....

That's a very good question. The first case would be true if the name was fully americanized - like the Gyllenhaals. In the latter case it would probably be "kee-ahn-free-yah" - similar to the vintage car race Mille Miglia ("mille mee-yyah").

Like @Meowzers said, it's the stupid/dumb/moron thing - several years ago SJWs decided that anything related to intellect was just as bad as retarded. It's ableist because over hundred years ago psychiatrists used the words idiot, imbecile, and moron to classify levels of people with intellectual disabilities. Mentally retarded actually replaced the previous words because it wasn't used in a derogatory sense (yet). Essentially it's not nice to call someone a mean word related to an intellectually disability, even if they haven't been used in that sense in over 100 years.

Edit: Lame and spaz are also out, because they're derogatory terms related to physical disabilities.

I'm so glad I no longer have to worry about the word police.

I thought it was specifically targeting terms that actually were used at some point like the ones you mentioned (I'd also like to add mongoloid, cretin, dumb, and probably cripple to that list). Oddly enough the only "disability word" that didn't eventually become offensive is "handicapped", people are apparently supposed to use "disabled" now but outside of a few retards - sorry, disability rights activists - if you referred to someone as handicapped no one would think it especially impolite. That one always annoys me because no one uses "handicapped" as an insult and "disabled" implies you straight up aren't able to do anything, whereas handicapped implies that you can kinda do stuff but you need extra accommodation because of a handicap. Handicap seems less insulting, but maybe it's "offensive" now because it isn't inclusive enough of people who are basically just a lump of flesh kept alive by machines, idk.

You know what, no one says cretin anymore and that's kind of a shame, I should start incorporating that into my insults. And "stupid" is still ableist to her even though the medical community has never diagnosed anyone with stupid (not formally anyway) so I guess virtually every insult could be interpreted as ableist when you can twist things around to suit the incredibly broad definition. Like if you say someone smells like shit you're being offensive to incontinent people, if you tell someone to drop dead you're offending the deceased and terminally ill by minimalizing their condition, call someone a bell-end you're offending people with foreskin phimosis, I could do this all fucking day. Not wanting people to call your Down's kid a stupid retard or whatever is quite understandable, but the majority of this shit is fine who isn't a shut in that passes the time by coming up with ways to interpret everything as offensive (and almost always on behalf of strangers who usually wouldn't give a fuck).
