I think the reaping of these left wing radical groups is coming near. And what is the major difference from those days? The media. You didn't have 24 hour news, the internet and social media spitting out constant doom. This shit is nothing compared to some of the unrest, when food becomes hard to get, that's when you are justified in getting pissed off. To some degree I think all of this woke bullshit really spawned at OWS, and I also don't think it was totally organic even then. OWS was some gay hippy drum-circle bullshit, sure, but people legitimately had turned their focus on the banks, the financial sector, etc. That's definitely not the result they wanted. Of course that sort of thing will attract Marxist shitbags but they really started laying it on thick. My money would be on a lot of paid activists/agitators, you can decide who probably paid them.
The atmosphere of their "camp" at OWS was generally pretty laid-back and chill, but then all the unironic tankies and anarchists started turning up, derailing the entire thing and turning that camp into a drug-ridden shithole of poor hygiene, trash dumping, theft, fights happening every night, etc. Eventually it became such a disruption and an eyesore that the NYPD had basically endless excuses to send their asses packing. It definitely got co-opted and transfigured into something much uglier than a bunch of dumb college kids and hippies sitting around beating on bongos. I think the Woke Cult of Intersectionalism was born there.

Someone earlier posted a quote from 1984 about people setting up fences within their own minds so that any time they started to commit a thoughtcrime, their own minds would stop them from finishing the thought. Protective stupidity.
My main theory is that is comes from decades of living within a media bubble and only having friends who live within the same media bubble. The NYT, the WaPo, CNN, MSNBC, and the other liberal media outlets have one particular take on the news. You'll see the same people and the same stories and the same arguments bouncing around in this same narrow space.
As an example of how not representative of the US this bubble is, I did something today that I've been wanting to do for a while. I watched 2 hours of MSNBC and I wrote down who the guests were. Ari Melber and Joy Reid were the hosts, so a Jewish man and a black Catholic woman.
There were 11 guests in the 2 hours, so including the hosts, that's
46% black
23% Catholic
23% Jewish
8% Hindu
0% white Protestant
The percent of Catholics is actually damn close to their numbers in the US, 22 vs. 23 percent. The number of black people is close to FOUR TIMES their prevalence in the population. The number of Jews is close to TEN TIMES their prevalence in the population. There were zero Hispanics and zero white Protestants; Hispanics are 17% of the US population and white Protestants are 30% (this number is low because 25% of white people give their religion as atheist/agnostic/don't know/don't care).
To someone who only reads stuff from inside that media bubble, this doesn't seem strange. But by the idpol agenda of the "woke" themselves, this is a strange and narrow spectrum of views that is being aired.

I remember watching the livestreams back then, before it became as prolific as it is now, and that type of instigation with the police was common place. The entire premise of Occupy was a mix of the wealth distribution myth, but also the FED reform was an issue that they never wanted people to really focus on. Then the Marxists starting coming out of the wood work. People couldn't organize because what was initially somewhat of a grassroots movement to scrutinize the financial shennegans of the big banks after tons of people lost their asses after 2008, then de-evolved to the shit pit.
The ANTIFA fuckers began spawning from that and as the Obama administration progressed, that was when we where seeing the gradual reemergence of the issue of race. Soros had his hands in the pockets of the Arab Spring then, so realistically it was just in its infancy in the West. That was also when social media was becoming more weaponized to suppress people that questioned the narrative. What we are seeing today is just a more extreme version of that, at more national scale.
People tend to forget how this faggotry came into fruition and how the mass population just slept on it so long. These same college aged people that participated in the wokeness then, have progressed into various sectors. Be that academics, technology, major corporations, what have you. That gave time for a bunch of the younger subset of that generation/my generation, to become weaponized into the force of perpetual autism known as the ANTIFAGs of today.
What made Occupy fall apart is the same fundamental disfunction that will make this implode. Narcissists looking for validation through internet stickers and handouts. It's gotten so off the rails that Twitter essentially has become its own echo chamber at this stage. Though those platforms never really where meant for the propagation of real malluable information anyways. The appeal of the platform was 140 characters or less of shit posting. Now it became an anti free speech, pro take the jab, defund the police, eat the bugs, cut your cock off, suck cock, and dye you hair purple brigade.

There's a lot of ways it could go. I'd say there's a pretty good chance the hard left does something to lose whatever public support they have left, something really heinous, like for example when Italian left-wing radicals kidnapped and murdered a politician. I've found a lot of parallels between Italy's years of lead and the current state of things in America, probably more so that than any other similar event (buildup to the Spanish civil war etc.). I'd definitely recommend reading up on it, as history can shed a lot of light on current events.
I'm not going to try and really predict the future or anything but it's totally feasible that some loon on the left does something really unconscionable like murdering a politician or blowing up a government building and that's the end of them as anything but a super fringe group, where even the mainstream media would turn on them. On the one hand, It'd be nice if everyone just chilled out without bloodshed, but on the other hand with how tense everything is, it really feels like something's gonna blow up, possibly literally.
By the same token, the far right could also do something to kill any support they might have had, again looking at Italy, when right-wingers blew up a train station and killed 85 people. If you ask me, it's simply a case of who chooses to move first.

I agree on things looking/feeling worse than they are right now, but i think you are discounting the whole "economy/financial system going down the drain" angle.
I would argue that will deliver us all into some serious shit hit the fan territory.
Not only have the lockdowns killed a ton of companies and resulted in severe unemployment that will get worse with every single day this continues, but you also have the central banks around the world trying to "fix" the numbers and stock market by printing a shit-ton of money that will eventually come home to roost as severe inflation. Most normal people are priced out of ever owning the home they live in, and prices for a ton of daily goods are also starting to increase and both of these problems are going to continue to get worse as any change to the interest rates or monetary easing insanity will result in a crash of the stock market as this is the only thing still keeping it in a good shape.
The FED and similar institutions around the world have backed themselves into a corner with this crap, and regardless of how exactly it ends, its going to get messy.
(judging by any historical precedent that remotely compares)
Currently things are still somewhat stable, but when a loaf of bread is 50$ thanks to 'rona stimulus Nr.15 and rent will go through the roof as the value of the property itself does,
you are going to see some real shit unfolding.
Or the central banks attempt to backpedal the printing and you will see investors flying off of rooftops again with a similar amount of instability as all the so called Zombie Companies kick the bucket left and right because the free loans keeping them alive all dry up.
All of this is some kind of perverted economical experiment and by now its far too late to stop or even properly control any of it. They can try to keep the momentum going but the path back to normality is one of big trouble.
Add that to ever worsening political radicalisation and you get a very wild ride altogether imo.
Not only do you get the perfect breeding ground for some large scale civil conflict, but you also have enough people in the mood to fuck up whomever they hate.
