I’m a black, Christian, bi woman with multiple disabilities. And that’s the short version.

Let’s start with my race. So I’m mixed with my mother being white and my father being black. I don’t consider myself being particularly light or dark skinned. My hair is pretty curly, but not kinky. I grew up in an Asian neighborhood and speak standardized English, so I’ve often been told that I sound “white”. This has no doubt given me a lot of privilege, but hasn’t stopped me from experiencing racism.

I also obviously can’t date women right now. With parents like mine, if I dated a girl, I’d probably just have to run away with her, which doesn’t seem the healthiest. I hate that I can’t make that choice as an adult, but I do still rely on my parents.

That’s because I have multiple disabilities (oh, what a transition). My most obvious disability is severe Tourette’s Syndrome. If you think that just means I swear a lot, I’m afraid pop culture and the media have failed you here. It’s actually a neurological condition that makes me make movements and noises I can’t control. Sometimes that just means I might tense a muscle or squeak and other times it means I hit tables or blurt out nonsensical sentences with no connection to my thoughts. I do have coprolalia (swearing tics that only occur in 10%-15% of people with Tourette’s), but Tourette’s for me is less about swearing and more about not being able to control my own body.

Tourette’s also comes with ADHD, dyspraxia, Sensory Processing Disorder and depression for me. This just means I think and experience the world differently than most people. I won’t go into any of these at the moment because this blog post will turn into a full DSM-5, but there’s some resources for each if you click on the links.

And finally, you wouldn’t know by looking at me, but I actually have a chronic illness. I’m diagnosed with fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), but I sort of consider my fibromyalgia to be a symptom of my ME. What this means is a bit more complicated than my other disabilities because the list of symptoms I experience is so extensive.

I have to admit, while the beginning of the thread absolutely floored me, I feel like reading through 400+ pages of this thread has really kind of desensitized me. Now I look at her and go "Yeah okay", even though it's pretty funny that she goes through the same damn motions over and over.
