TGWTG Nostalgia Chick / Lindsay Ellis / TheDudette - aka Hotdogs in face girl

thots i wrote last night while watching Dork's stream

  • lindsay's list of sins is SO STUPIDLY detailed that it makes each of the dumb non-issues on the list into a bigger target imo, it makes me want to decide that I now find fault in her for all of those reasons just to spite her

  • The section on twilight (jfc yes there's a whole section in this video just about twilight) is a rehash of a section of Sarah Z's twilight video, similar enough that Lindsay probably referenced it to script this part of her video. From what i can remember she doesn't cite SZ for that breakdown, and probably thinks it's nbd because she mentions SZ elsewhere in the vid and links her below. Sarah Z is super obnoxiously woke, even moreso than Lindsay, but she's better than Lindsay at being articulate, well-researched, and charismatic in her own nerdy way without leaning on schtick and memes like Lindsay.

  • Jenny Nicholson is still best girl, I guarantee Dork is not a simp for singing her praises, she is just that good.

  • lindsay using training wheels for her tequila and she calls herself an alcoholic

I wish the Dork would stop saying, "What she is saying is sometimes reasonable". No it isn't.
Tbf, he says that as a sort of "get out of jail" card so his streams don't look like just mockery.
For example, Dork watched Quinton Reviews' My Virtual VidCon and mocked the ever-loving shit out of it but he made sure to state he respected him because he awkwardly showed up on stream.
Is more about diplomacy than him literally meaning it.

To stay on YouTube at all these days you have to tiptoe constantly.

I'm surprised he got away with criticizing her at all.

The funniest thing about this shit is that literally no one here gave a fuck about that tweet. If she views us as "Nazis," then the people "cancelling" her can't be-- their priorities are opposite ours (though the reality is that there aren't any Nazis involved on either side.) This is what happens when you cow-tow to the ideological demands of puritanical twats-- they move the goalposts every day, eagerly awaiting peoples' failure to meet them so they can start a dogpile. You shouldn't be shocked when they do the exact same thing to you.

Was sucking the ladydique was worth it, Lindsay? It did nothing to prevent you from being branded with the same scarlet letter as the TERFs.

I didn't even touch on that part, but you're absolutely right. They don't come at older media from the perspective of explaining why things are different now, their goal is to diminish the influence/reputation of the artwork based on modern benchmarks the creators are unlikely to have fulfilled.

ATLA is a great example. It commits the heinous sin of depicting east-asian cultures as an amorphous blob, and is therefore ~problematic~. But that was a really common mistake in American media 15-20 years ago, and I'd argue that it's a lot less egregious in Avatar A) because the cultures are fictional and are only modeled after real ones and B) the show made an effort to distinguish the fictional cultures from each other. Crucially too, people generally don't do it anymore, because the internet has made normies more aware of the differences between Japan, China, Korea, etc.

Reminds me of a dumbass I met in college who was offended by RHPS because it uses the word "transsexual." It was made in the fucking seventies! Did you expect them to consult a fucking crystal ball about what nomenclature people use fifty years in the future?
Yep and this is effectively the Achilles heel to every leftist video essay regarding something from the past or their miserable childhoods.
Another big issue is that they go on "Good thing" and "bad thing" logic which hardly ever works when you're talkin about history because of how nuanced it is.
Take Al Jolson, even though he did do blackface he was easily the most Progressive white men of his day by going out of his way to help his black friend break into show business and even use some of his money to fund black endeavors.
However modern woke leftist who say he's racist and disregard all of the progress he helped make possible because of his black face gig.
They sure do love to erase the parts that contradict their own merits

I always thought "cancelled" was popularized by Stan Twitter and "woke" was popularized by Erykah Badu. The Michael Brown shooting was also a major catalyst in mainstreaming that word.

it wouldn't be unfair or inaccurate to say that these internet words do eventually end up changing in meaning. they evolve like viruses, & with how many rhetorical infections happen with these memetic diseases every day, there's millions of opportunities for them to evolve every second. i think a lot of younger to middle gen z as well have a bit more of a perspective of having the words thrown onto their lap as opposed to watching it unfold in real time. can't ignore the younger half of gen z & how disconnected it is from gamergate.

Lindsay's book has a sequel due out October 12th 2021 so I'm sure her publisher is hoping she'll get all of this social media drama nonsense out of her system now so it won't distract her from promoting the book. They'll be disappointed when "Book 2" gets released a week after Lindsay puts out her 3 hour and 20 minute "Mask Off 4" video.

No doubt they are hoping it sells better than her last one.

Despite being a NYT Bestseller for all of a week, walk into any book store in the country and you will find a ton of unsold copies which are already making thier way to resale/secondhand book stores.

Her publisher was likely hoping that her "influencer" status would push way more units than she ended up selling. Depending on the size of her advance they may have actually lost money on AXIOMS END.

That's less of a Lindsay thing and more of a publishing thing... most of the big five publishers are kept afloat by big names while losing money on dozens of small ones. Case in point, Brandon Sanderson (along with the back catalog of OSC, Robert Jordan, et al) probably has single handedly subsidized dozens of woke authors at Tor whose books lost the publisher money.

So far, Lindsay's career as an author looks to be following a typical path: fills out her contract, publisher looks at the sales numbers, tells her to take a hike. Maybe sooner if she ends up getting cancelled or crucified by the wokies at the Hugos.

Ironically, buying herself a Campbell nomination at the Hugos may have hurt ger career more than it helps.

Also forgot to say that I finally saw her entire video and it really felt like she was trying to play the center field.
The people that went after her were all leftist and as woke as they can be but she tried to spin it towards it being a bunch of alt-right trolls.
This is one of my biggest issues when it comes to the Reds and that they love to disavow all sorts of BS until they engage in it then it's for a progressive cause.
How is talking about eradicating white people not racist?
Especially when 90% of them are white women who by their own logic are apart of the same crooked scale?
On top of that how is giving the final say on what is and isn't something to an entire black race not racist in itself?
These anti-racist jackasses are so backwards that they're actually pushing the rhetoric they claim the Right is.

No, it's because "Honest Trailers" audience is a bunch of twelve-year-olds who don't give a flying fuck about your race-baiting horseshit.
To be fair, Honest Trailers dooose makes some jokes at the expense at white people a lot of times, when the movie or topic at hand has race issue ingrain in them

Influencer is such a cold, creepy, dystopian term.
It might as well just be "puppeteer."
Like when she shows the clips of these right-wingers complaining about cancel culture and (as it turns out, rightfully) warning that it can happen to anyone, she really doesn't see how making fun of them does not help her case at all because she is, at this very moment, complaining about being cancelled and not deserving it in 2-hour Behemoth of a video which mostly consists of a pathetic combination of self-pity and arrogance. But orange man bad I guess so it's all fine.
Something just occurred to me that I haven't thought of before, she's carrying herself in the video as someone who's simply minding their own business and is unfairly being dogpiled by other people for no reason and said people are working backward from the conclusion she's awful and cherry picking their way to a premise.

Jenny is basically an unironic version of the Nerd Crew, but I find her to have the least repellent personality of anyone in the Breadtube sphere. I think what I like about her is that she isn't pseudo intellectual or condescending-- she's self-aware enough to acknowledge the inherent absurdity of being an adult obsessed with kid shit.

Her weird upload schedule and ties to Hontra are pretty much the only things I truly dislike about her. Lindsay should really take a cue from Jenny and include more humor in her videos again.

It's by far the most annoying thing said about her. She isn't intelligent, she doesn't say reasonable things, and she doesn't have good observations. I don't know why people play softball with her. She is absolutely awful and a massive hypocrite. The only reason she fools anyone is because she says things with confidence. She isn't intelligent, she just has basic charisma. People need to learn the difference.
I think he meant what she was saying about cancel culture being dumb and people being obsessive with it, but then having zero self-awareness because she does the exact same shit. He might try too hard to be centrist sometimes though. Like, no, there's no such thing as institutional white privilege or (in the US) systemic racism and these people talking about "muh representation" have no idea what they're talking about nor any kind of point. He doesn't say they do, but he kinda dances around the topic, and he's done that before, like he thinks he'll stop being neutral or seem too political if he acknowledges how stupid and not-based-in-reality so many leftist talking points are.

Total sidebar, but was BreadTube the best name they could come up with for their little circlejerk? Really?
legit tho, it should have just been LeftTube, like LeftBook

its supposed to be a reference to Conquest of Bread by Kropotkin, which ofc is an important text and something they all are proud to reference but at the end of the day is ivory tower stuff that means dick to your average working class person like Lindsay’s southern “white trash” family (her words ofc, lovely)

I sat through the whole thing. It's kind of fucked up that what she took from being blasted on the socials was apparently the need to tell the whole world that extremely personal story about her and her friend. She's sort of right in the sense that it's what her detractors want.
Still, she offered some well-put criticisms on what's going on with the left and particularly with online discourse, regardless of how Leopards-Ate-My-Face the realization of it is. The only thing I really have to say to all that though is that however bullshit some of what she's been dragged on is, Ellis herself helped to shape this type of Twitter discourse. Now "the beast" has come for her, yeah, because Twitter in particular is a big stupid purity circlejerk now.

Its a pretty apt name. They're all bland, uninspired and white.

The real difference between Jenny and the rest is she rarely brings up politics. Lindsay adding humor to her videos will change nothing if all of her videos revolve around leftist talking points.

I honestly thought it was a referrence to soviet breadlines.

I honestly thought it was a referrence to soviet breadlines.
Aside from it being boring, that's the most unfortunate thing about the name; Socialism and bread have plenty of negative associations. Whenever I hear the name I always think about Molotov's bread baskets and imagine some poor Finnish civilians being roasted alive.

I think the only good thing that came out of this is that the left is forced to finally admit they cancel culture isn't something that their detractors made up.
Cancel culture has effectively been turned into a political tool to mute your opponents just because you don't share their perspective.
The entire world is forced to beat around the bush and tap dance to the same song because people will be offended by anything you say regardless of the context.
Whether people like Ellis realize it or not they have blood on their hands and now it's gotten so radical that one dissenting I think it can cause you your livelihood or even your life.
The idea of " taking accountability" doesn't work when people refuse to allow a person to grow past their mistakes
