Chris Poole, who founded controversial online community 4chan before joining Google in 2016, has left the search giant after jumping among several groups within the company, CNBC has learned.
Poole's last official day at Google was April 13th, according to an internal repository viewed by CNBC, which described his last role as a product manager. Oftentimes, employee shares attached to hiring vest at the five-year mark, though it's unclear if that's a reason for Poole's departure now.
Poole did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Google confirmed that Poole is no longer employed there.
Poole, who goes by the moniker "Moot," founded 4chan in 2003 at age 15. It grew into one of the most influential and controversial online communities to date. Rolling Stone famously called him a boy-genius and the "Mark Zuckerberg of the online underground."
4chan became an early internet haven for nearly unfettered free speech. But over time, it faced criticism for hosting hackers, obscene imagery, harassment and leaked information — often targeting women and minority groups — and became the target of multiple lawsuits, as well as FBI subpoenas for threats of violence posted to the site, according to reports. In 2015, Poole announced his retirement from running 4chan and sold the site to Japanese internet entrepreneur Hiroyuki Nishimura for an undisclosed amount.
Poole revealed in 2016 that he'd joined Google as a continuation of his work, and in a now-removed post, stated he'd use his "experience from a dozen years of building online communities" and "grow in ways one simply cannot on their own." He joined as product manager in the photos and streams unit, which oversaw social networking efforts under VP Bradley Horowitz at the time. That sparked speculation that the company hired him to help it revamp its social media ambitions, some of which aimed to compete with Facebook.
Poole jumped between several different roles during his five years. At one point, he reportedly became a partner at Google's in-house start-up incubator, Area 120, which was just getting off the ground in 2016. He then became a product manager in Google's Maps division, according to Crunchbase.
Some employees and industry workers criticized the hire, since Google had just made public commitments to diversity, and viewed executives' enthusiasm of Poole's hiring as tone deaf. Google+ chief architect Yonatan Zunger wrote a now-removed post defending Poole and promising Google Plus wouldn't "become a den of infamy" adding that Poole was "going to make something really exciting."
The company eventually shuttered the social network in 2018 after it gained little traction against Facebook and other social media sites.

I shared this news to a guy I know on Discord and he said it best when he heard of the news.

I'll be shocked if that is the reason he left Google. No way in fucking hell he would leave a job that supposely pays you 100K bucks just to waste jacking off to CP? Then again? Moot might have just did just that. What a shame. :/
Yes, the most sensible explanation for leaving Google the moment he vested all his equity is clearly child pornography, and not the likely precipitous change in his total compensation.

For those who don’t know, equity is usually determined at the time of hire. Normally it has a one year cliff and a four to five year vesting schedule. This means you get 20-25% on day 366, and then slowly move toward 100% over the next three to four years. Employees are then given “refreshers,” which provide more distant equity rewards. The intention is to keep your compensation about the same over time. So you might get an extra 25% vesting over four years once your first year is over; it replaces the equity chunk you pocketed after your cliff.

Anyway, the point is that if you get hired, you get a specific amount of money promised to you. After that is given to you, the company chooses how much extra to give you to keep you. Unlike a salary, which keeps arriving for as long as you work, there is a limited amount of equity to collect, and a very deliberate process for refilling the pot.

The most likely explanation is that Moot was given a massive, massive equity promise in exchange for joining the Google+ and other social guys, but then was left homeless at Google after Google+ collapsed. So he likely got a really great deal on the first five years, but the refreshers were more like standard senior engineer fare (as his insights were no longer as valuable). Net result: a large pay cut if he stayed on past five years. Makes sense to leave.

Depending on how much he got, he might retire or do something new. I suspect we’ll see some new site from him in a year or two.

4chan canv.as was never good
Speaking as someone who has been there for over a decade beta'd it
Fixed.

I don't know why anyone thought moot would revolutionize social media. He just copied the japanese formula for forums that was already a proven success and brought it to the western internet so people could share funny pictures & anime with comments & discussion without having to pay 10 bux or suffer retarded moderation staff. I mean jannies got worse over time but even a 2021 janny is 1000x better than any SA mod from the past 20 years.

I've known a few folks who've worked for Google in stints and they all said the same thing; unless you're working your way up to the top levels, perform an essential function or are fucking a senior, it makes little sense to stay long. Google looks good on your resume and you get paid better elsewhere. Kind of like Blizzard Entertainment today.

Yeah you say all of that but all I hear is child porn.

Last I saw about him, he was working for Google Maps and living in Japan. I'd assume he's either done w/ living in Japan or he's found a Japanese company that doesn't care about his "controversial" past running a "white nationalist" website. I do feel a bit sympathetic towards him because he was definitely not fond of /new/ or /pol/ at all, and often openly antagonistic towards it and he still gets slandered as some "former admin of a neo-nazi website". All of his non-4chan projects have failed and he's not the cause of 4chan's popularity and staying power in the modern net, but I still do hope he's able to do something interesting as the internet is desperately needing more websites that don't suck ass and generate interesting culture.

Compare to something like Google that fucks your search results and gets into trouble with the US Government? Gee? I wonder WHY Moot left Google headquarters. Such a nice company to work with. :/

After leaving 4chan why would anyone care about this faggot?

Wonder how many bridged got burned when he did his SJW switch to protect faire maiden Blowey from gamergate? Cant imagine the SJW crew tolerated him long.
so long as he's willing to wear a skirt, he's immune to SJW bullying. And he's always willing.

The five year term is very common, either because people's projects collapsed or Google is going to absolute shit and you just want to get out with a golden parachute, something you usually don't get after a mere five years. After Google+ he just went around from one shitty project to another, nothing that could really be salvaged.

He probably has enough now to fund something of his own again, if he lives relatively modestly instead of flitting around to Tokyo and other places. Occasionally /qa/ has a thread of recent pictures of moot and Tokyo seems to be a common theme.

He always hated /pol/ and tried deleting its predecessors /n/ (when /n/ was basically what became /pol/ not current /n/) and /new/.
