Older protest movements had their image sanitised in the years since or those which failed were simply forgotten (because a record of a leftist movement failing undermines the moral arc of history) , so they'll always appear better than their modern equivalents. The Civil Rights movement was way worse than BLM , and the contemporary right saw it in a similar way.
