I've avoided Kelly's thread since early on cause it really bums me out but this update has left me really angry. This woman has been utterly failed by her doctors and should have been institutionalised well before this point. The docs themselves have noted the shit in the wounds so you either have a patient who is carrying out extreme self harm OR at the very least one with a demonstrated incapacity to care for basic hygiene around the wounds. Letting it get this far is shocking tbh.

I used to work in mental health. Specifically, in locked behavioral health units. The way patients rights are set up now, you cant just stick some in a hospital and force them to do things anymore. You can barely restrain people anymore.

She still would have been able to do this to herself even if she was institutionalized. She would just pick when no one was watching. (Night shift) Also, her case is a problem with her personality. So psych meds likely would not have helped her. Personality disorders are so pervasive and practically incurable. You’ll have an easier time treating bipolar disorder and anxiety. The doctors honestly did all they could do without proof (like a confession from her that she was doing this to herself). Without proof, they are legally obligated to treat symptoms that they are aware of.

This is why munchies are able to game the system and healthcare professionals are forced to watch.
