In anticipation of the stump saga, I gleaned the following from various med sites:
After surgery, hospital stays last 3 to 7 days. People with other health problems may stay longer. I imagine a double amputation would warrant a longer stay.
Ideally, the wound should fully heal in about four to eight weeks.
A dressing using rigid material such as plaster is applied immediately after surgery and kept in place for 5-7 days. A non-removable cast can be worn for 1-2 weeks following surgery for BKAs. It keeps the knee from bending and preps it for a prosthetic, which also keep straying hands away.
Wound care is vital, obviously, and requires interacting with the wound on a daily basis. Activities such as 'tapping' are advised to desensitize the stump, again to prepare for a prosthetic. It is also advised to massage it to promote blood circulation. Don't rub the wound, it says. ha.
