Dragon Quest

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
While the PS2 version is the best-looking graphically, the DS version has features it doesn't have, like a third wife option and 2 new monsters you can get as party members(Jailcat from VIII and Archdemon from II/VII/VIII)
Plus RPGs like Dragon Quest are nicer on handheld for portability and easy to take a break when needed, or at least is a plus for me.

This only works if the portable battery isn't shit.

Besides consoles all now have a rest button as well and get more than 3 hours of run time.

I was thinking of getting Dragon Quest XI on Steam - does anyone have an opinion on it?
On par with 8, if you like Dragon Quest you will have a good time, get the definitive edition you get mini-quests between Act 1 and Act 2 involving the party members. My Biggest complaint is that You can't reforge the best weapon in the game into a 2 handed Sword so the Hero is sort of Cornholed into 1 handed weapons.

Speaking of VIII, I got my hands on a PS2 copy not too long ago (would have gone with 3DS, but it was nearly $50 cheaper just to get it on PS2). What's interesting to me is that I can see the genesis of a lot of ideas that would get fleshed out more in XI. Most notably there's the alchemy pot, which is a cool idea and it has more of a puzzle element to it, though I personally prefer the Fun-Sized Forge. There's also the skill points, which I flat out think was done better in XI since there's no way of knowing which skills you should upgrade on a first run nor will you know what weapons you'll end up with unless you know ahead of time.

On the whole though it's really good. I like the characters, and the smaller cast gives them more time to shine. As much as I love XI's cast, some characters kinda drift into the background. I especially like that the game has you actively chasing Dhoulmagus as opposed to other games which have the antagonist sitting in an evil castle somewhere. Maybe that will happen, I don't know, I just got the ship, but it gives the early game a sense of agency. I also like how the world feels so vast; the overworld feels like classic Dragon Quest transplanted into 3D, and there are moments where it's absolutely breathtaking.

Tension is a good precursor to Super Sayajin Blue, except it takes up so many turns...

The best part about VIII on the 3DS is that it has additional characters that felt like they should have joined the gang during the PS2 era.

I've heard about that. I'm really curious how it was balanced considering the original cast is only 4 characters, so I would think the game was designed around you using those 4 characters. I would like to try the 3DS version at some point though.

dq11 on switch has been my jam for the past year and a half. (irl stuff.)

is it just me or is Sylvando kind of just the worst character gameplay wise. They gave him more status-healing moves and some utility stuff but he's kind of a shitty red mage. Sure he has some utility and some damage, but he's a mediocre DPS-wise outside of that pep power duo move, The Executioner. His utility is kinda broad and I wish he had some consistent damage use or something to make me use him for general-use outside of some bosses or quests that require him for reasons.

I'm about 90 hours in and am pretty close to getting the upgrades for the Supreme Sword of Light. I just need to get the shit for a normal and standard sword of light all over again as an ingredient.

Been also busy trying to get the evolution weapons geared up as well. Finished the spear. I'll probably do the boomerang and axe next.

I dearly wish we had an S rank boomerang in the shops because, for the life of me, I've only found the easily-ish accesible one to be the evolution series one. It's also the one great use for Erik in normal mob clears because I run erik with the pirate king pendent and Jade with that schoolgirl outfit and both of those increase the chances of opponents dropping items. I wish I got all the items from the Academy quests asap instead of dealing with them this late bc they're all excellent supporting accessories but would have helped early on.

I cheesed the majority of Act 2 with buffs and by getting shit like critical claim+shadow clone Erik. I regret not letting either of the claw users mainline claws but Rab and Jade's other weapons were just too good.

In Act 3 now, finished the first of the trials to get the recipe book for the supreme sword of light recipe. Did the majority of the world events like the Bathesfear fight and the Cobblestone stuff. The only things left are to finish all the quests, get the S rank weapons, do all the trials in the Isle, and get all the outfits. Hopefully I'll finish the beastiary and mini medals too. Ofc along the way I'll probs go from mid 70s to lvl 99 so I'm not in any rush.

One thing that's felt weird all game has been the lack of any playable bows in a fantasy game. Idk why I'd think about this but I sort of wish one of the twins could use a bow.

-I don't have decent shields outside of that one you pick up in the first trial that's devilish drinker or sth. I know you can get a shield for the Luminary but I'm not at that point.

-The Tockle stuff is hella fun and makes me want to do the rest of the series as an adult I've played through the GBC ports of DQ1-2-3 as a kid and the DQ monsters stuff on the gbc too.

Jade best girl, come at me veronica fags.

Dragon Quest XI was probably the best gateway to play JRPGs on the Switch, in my opinion. Right next to Octopath Traveler and the success of the remastered versions of the Mana series, it‘s a very well done game from its time.
I swear DQ11 on the switch is considered current gen.

Octopath is fine but I can't see it as a gateway. I'd consider Bravely Default II to be a better gateway than Octopath because Octopath is very classic jrpg in the sense that its grind heavy asfaik.

As for other good jrpgs on the switch, I'd call the Fire Emblem and mainline pokemon games we got kinda mediocre if one counts them as JRPGs.

Most ports have turned out alright. I don't like that the DQ 1-2-3 ports are the fucking mobile ones. Really wish they'd just port the rest of the DQ games like they do to the FF ones.

DQ Builders 2 is a fun time. IDK about DQ Builders 1 but I'm def. picking it up before the price bumps up.

As an adult, DQ11 is my second DQ game that I'm about to beat. The first was DQ Builders 2. Yeah I beat a bunch as a kid but those memories have kinda faded away.

When I'm done with DQ11 100%, I'm going to go through DQ5 on my phone. Picked it up on google play on sale. Heard it's a decent version. After I beat that, then I"ll probably go through DQ8 and then DQ7 because I'm curious about those 2.

Yeah I'm going out of order but the games are pretty self-contained, thankfully.

I hear rumors of a DQ9 remake.

DQ8 is extremely similar to 11 in the best of ways. DQBuilders 1 is fun but after playing 2 with the QoL changes it might feel more basic but still a good time.

The entire BD series is disappointing. I wish Square would just make a real Final Fantasy again. Meanwhile I'm buckled up and ready to wait 20 years for the Dragon Quest XII.
I think Bravely Second is the best of the lot, I don't recall the mechanics in it actively getting in the way of the gameplay

Yeah I'll probably run through DQ 5 or 8 after this.

DQ Builders 1 is a very long down the road thing.
Bravely Default 2 is straight Trash though, hard to be a gateway if you are one of the worst RPGs in years.
Is it now? I don't get the clamor behind it. It just feels mildly charming and generic but the gameplay feels lame. Haven't touched it beyond the demo but I did pick a physical copy used for 40 bucks. With the pre-order poster and coasters.

This saddens me a little. Why's it disappointing? I'm not too familiar with it.

Honestly wish Sqeenix would just remake, remaster, and port the old DQ games for current gen stuff. They ported DQ8 to mobile devices, how is it not on PC/Console for current gen?

Bravely Mediocre seems to be the name of the series from what I've heard. I haven't touched it beyond the BD2 demo.

MFW I'd love for Squeenix+Nintendo to do another massive DQ push like they did in the late 2000s. It'd probably do really fuckin well because, unlike Squeenix's other franchises, DQ is kinda just a whole and extremely well made series from the ground up. I can't think of an apt analogy but it's cozy, timeless, and well made.

(I've yet to play an outright bad DQ game. I hear DQ6 is the worst game by DQ standards but that ain't saying mmuch given that the same people I hear it from always say that it's still a damn good JRPG. )
