If by most Doomers you mean the loud and cranky ones, then yeah. Plenty of us are fine with GZDoom, especially because of the potential for modding. All my favorite gameplay mods for Doom are on GZDoom, and I'm not some sort of purist, so I don't really give a shit about the "vanilla, but improved!" style source ports.
I'm mostly referring to YouTubers like decino, Dwars, MtPain27, Zero Master, and the like, and I'm extrapolating a rather broad generalization that most of their viewers would also be inclined to play in the "purist" fashion as they do.
Most that decino inspired me was to play on UV+fast monsters with pistol start, it makes your appreciate the chain gun, which I barely ever used, but I like my mouse look too good to switch to a purist port.
I may just have to try UV+fast on the original two games, myself. That sounds fun.
He never mentions purity by himself. People frequently ask him what port he's using and then he tells them and explains why. Decino seems like one of the chillest youtuber I know, maybe outdid only by SpiritOfTheLaw, but that guy is Canadian and that's cheating.

BFG strats in Deathmatch have always been funny to me because it's basically a game of "pre-fire the BFG and then hope the other player runs into the invisible tracers".
He speedruns, and classic Doom speedruns are near exclusively done by making demo recordings according to whichever compat levels. He'd have to use more purist ports by necessity.

I'm aware, and I'm not giving him shit for it. I'm using him as an example of a Doom YouTube uploader who plays by purist standards, which is not a bad thing in and of itself, but you're always going to have a retarded majority audience who watches him (and the others I mentioned) and thinks "THE PURIST WAY OF PLAYING DOOM IS THE ONLY RIGHT WAY TO PLAY DOOM. EVERYONE ELSE IS A FILTHY CASUAL". And that's stupid. But it's not the YouTubers' faults that their viewers are prone to stupid bouts of elitism just so they can also feel like "haha REAL Doom players".
