For real. I need a shower in bleach after becoming acquainted with this thread tonight. I have never seen anything like this before.

May I recommend Hibiclens. Bleach is not actually very effective, and the fumes are not conducive to a pleasant showering experience.

She's got to be well-known in the hospital as a self-inflictor, they definitely roll their eyes whenever they hear about her having come in again ... She's a lost cause really. Lock her up in a facility for life and forget about her. Nothing's ever going to come out of her life.

I see a lot of comments expressing this general sentiment in this thread and I just want to say something.

Most hospital staff are way too overworked to remember anyone in particular or go out of the way to spread gossip about a patient (we gossip endlessly about each other instead). We also don't judge your lives, or change our standard of care because we secretly think you are worthless.

As for the issue of monitoring patients' social media, legally it is a grey area but most are very oldschool about this, and we occasionally hear of someone being censured because they friend requested a patient to gain access to their social media.

I may come off as naive to be saying this (and I probably have a reputation for living under a rock), but honestly, Kelly's situation is unusual and rare enough that I don't think a lolcow hospice idea is viable.

Who in the world would think this is a good idea? From my interactions with nursing staff at the local hospital, they all seem super focused and way too busy to care much about a patient's personal life.

1. That wasn't a nerve. Several people with medical knowledge have said it can't be (too big) and that it was probably a lymph vessel. The only reason it keeps being mentioned as a nerve is bc Kelly said she thought it was a nerve when she posted that damn picture. Iirc she herself said afterwards (maybe even when she posted in this thread?? You can go back and check) that it wasn't a nerve, her doctor confirmed that.

Other people with medical knowledge said it WAS a nerve. I don’t think most people here have seen the human nervous system, they’re not all tiny hair-like fibers. But unless Kelly kept it for observation (she may well have, actually) people are just going to keep debating it. I don’t remember her doctor ever confirming it was not a nerve, but if there’s proof somewhere I will stand corrected.

Usually that's when someone donates their body to science. Their body is used as a learning tool or diagram for various things. Usually people get such tasks as a learning experience since they can't be practicing on live bodies just yet.

Is there any sort of criteria for the type/quality of prosthetic one gets? Will someone look at Kelly's history, her amputation and be like "Yeah, give her a basic model. Until she can prove she needs to be active/can take care of her amputation site, she doesn't get anything fancy." I highly doubt Kelly's family will shell out any money for anything beyond what the hospital is obligated to provide. Just curious.

It really depends on if she can even qualitiy for a prosthesis:

They had 93 people they looked into out of them only 24 were approved to get a prosthesis.

they're sterile medical maggots, nothing she can do with them can really do much damage to herself. if they're deprived of oxygen or food they'll die off, otherwise they'll pupate and turn into flies within like a week or two, and then they fly away.

I've seen that before too. It's crazy to look at, but offers greater mobility. It's really only used with cancer patients, where cancer affects either the thigh or knee, but the lower leg is still healthy. I most cases where a leg has to be removed, the lower leg has been damaged in some way, even just by blood vessel trauma.

Besides the leg rot, Kelly wasn't eligible for the rotationplasty mostly because her sciatic nerves were damaged and she ripped out other valuable sources of innervation to her legs. Plus, vascular damage. If they did this, the foot part would just be completely limp and rot off.

Not all amputations are suitable for, or performed with a view to prostheses. Each individual hospital has their own guidelines (PDF link to a random UK one).

Prosthetics are also not 100% covered by insurance. Like dental braces, how much you can pay out of pocket absolutely determines what kind you get.

I think Kelly is likely eligible, but her family may balk at the prices combined with the fact that they also have to purchase a wheelchair (or several) anyway. They also don't last long - on paper they are supposed to last 15 years, but normal use sees them wear out in 3-5 years, even with regular component changes.

Kelly has never gotten and will not be getting maggots. The IV antibiotics in her body will kill maggots.

Maggots have tiny burrs along their bodies to help them stay lodged in position/utilise surface tension to float in liquids. It feels absolutely gross, and the acidic conditions of the human vagina (combined with the fact that the vagina is normally "shut" flat) will kill it.

Where I am, maggot debridement is performed under "day surgery" conditions. Patient is covered with blanket and face covering, anaesthesiologist administers local or general "twilight" anaesthesia, the wound is covered in nylon netting, a canister of maggots overnighted from a hospital that has them is painstakingly counted out and placed by the surgeon, other end of nylon netting is sealed up and affixed.

2-4 days later, maggots are carefully counted out (and replaced if need be).

It really is. I've had people DM me in reddit telling me how I should have compassion for her. I'm pretty sure they are the ones downvoting me and reporting my account and shit. She fucking did this to herself and she's HAPPY about it. Ecstatic I would even say...its like watching a horror movie play out in real life. Idk what I'd says about me that I have zero sympathy toward her but fuck it. She's a freak show and we all got free tickets to this 1 ring circus. After seeing all of her sock accounts, I have my doubts about her sisters posts. I also have my doubts about her sister even being real but we all know she's not that great at photoshop so I'll assume Gina is real. Her new Instagram is terrifying. The stumps bopping up and down and her documentary style of this is just wow. No words. Any normal person would be like oh fuck fuck fuck what have I done, and be like at rock bottom. Unfortunately I don't think this is rock bottom for her yet. Wanting to join amputee communities is maddening. Like, 99% of the people in those communities didn't do this to themselves, so when they find out the truth I hope they shun her.

I am still catching up with the last 50 pages or so which seem to recap most of the horror. One thing that's not really been discussed (and I'll take dumb, late or autistic ratings if it's earlier in the thread), but does she have an abnormally high pain tolerance or is she dosed up heavily on pain killers?

It's one thing cutting yourself or picking a scab, but to pick away flesh, nerves and actually cut bone has to be so incredibly painful. How she doesn't pass out is beyond me. Unless she lost feeling in the (former) leg from the abuse? But that still had to have happened over time
