Topic of the thread: yes, it does seem to have gotten worse, but I can't tell how much of that is the internet shrinking and how much of that is search engines.

That said the part of search I miss Google image search back when it still did results in pages. That rabbithole led to many a casually entertaining afternoon and things haven't been the same ever since.

I got into the Brave search beta, honestly don't have the motivation to fuck with it right now but if anyone has any searches they want to test and compare with other engines I can run them through

Well, since it's a recent point of interest upthread, go look for Mike's Dave's nutz.

People have been telling me lately that google image search was getting bad, but I had no idea it was this next fucking level.

I saw this image and thought "is that Davig Lynch? I'll reverse image search and find out!"

Here's a knockoff search engine from a shitty third world country

That is indeed, David Lynch. Thanks Putin.

I can find almost no discussion anywhere about Brave Search, even their own reddit. I want to see if it deranks the sites we've talked about earlier in this thread - the fake review sites, pinterest, quora, and other worthless search clogs google thrusts on us.

I tried looking up the MPAA rating of Total Recall (a 1990 film). Google returned results as in ratings by critics. I had to get more specific, and the top result was about which age group you think the movie is appropriate for. Finally after narrowing it down even more, I had to open IMDB to find out the rating.

argh...

(Also the Wikipedia article doesn't say from what I could see.)

I try this with people's avatars on here, and 99% of the time I get a generic response like, "Man", "Woman", "Cartoon", etc.

I recently searched Amazon for 'outdoor security cameras'. The very first result? An indoor (only) security camera.

i cant even

Store search engines I swear must be using whatever algorithm Google is using. Similarly - Walmart.com will give you shit results as well, only tangentially related to what you are looking for.

Solution? Some else posted this earlier in the thread - search on DDG or whatever 'amazon outdoor security camera' and you usually get better results than doing it on the website. Same thing for Walmart.com.

If you search up the word “nigger” on Google, you only receive articles on the history of the word. I miss reading the frenetic ramblings of some angry racist from “ihateblackpeople.com”.

Certain search results like that I think are hand curated. This also goes along with what I said a few pages ago about Google cutting out alot of forums from search results. I think they do about the same thing for medical results, they probably didn't want natural news type results coming up when you searched for cancer symptoms.

Yeah, this is what we've been saying for a while now. In an earlier post from a few weeks ago, I mentioned that I tested out reverse image searches across multiple sites by using a photo of a well-known Hollywood actress. Google's results = "woman" and had generic photos of women. Bing = "zero results". Yandex = the original source photo I used came back as a result, as well as hundreds of images of her -- but the sites were all in Russian and had malware popups.

Did they ever explain this? Their reverse image search hasn't been usable for a good 5+ years now. My thought, without researching it, is that maybe people were using it to dox/stalk people somehow, but I have no idea.

I was using image search on a fairly regular basis just a few months ago. It seemed like it worked fine. In that time though I wasn't specifically looking up people. It seems like now it doesn't work on anything at all.
