Trans kids in the US were seeking treatment decades before today’s political battles over access to health care

In 1942, a 17-year-old transgender girl named Lane visited a doctor in her Missouri hometown with her parents. Lane had known that she was a girl from a very young age, but fights with her parents over her transness had made it difficult for her to live comfortably and openly during her childhood. She had dropped out of high school and she was determined to get out of Missouri as soon as she was old enough to pursue a career as a dancer.

The doctor reportedly found “a large portion of circulating female hormone” in her body during his examination and suggested to Lane’s parents that he undertake an exploratory laparotomy – a surgery in which he would probe her internal organs in order to find out more about her endocrine system. But the appointment ended abruptly after her father refused the surgery, feeling “the doctor did not know what he was talking about.”

I first encountered Lane’s story buried among the papers of an endocrinologist, but her brief encounter with a doctor during her teenage years was typical of many transgender children like her in the early to mid-20th century. These stories form a key thread of the first several chapters of my book, “Histories of the Transgender Child,” and they point to the tremendous obstacles these kids faced in a world where the word “transgender” didn’t even exist.

The living laboratories of gender

In the first half of the 20th century there was nothing like today’s gender-affirming pediatric care model, which involves building a social support network and can include treatments like hormone blockers. Doctors simply did not allow trans patients to transition.

That doesn’t mean doctors and researchers weren’t interested in seeing children like Lane as patients. But instead of supporting their wishes and hopes, doctors tended to see them as canvases for experimentation – to see how their growing bodies responded to various surgeries or hormonal cocktails. In my research I tracked several decades of this kind of medical research, beginning in the early 20th century at research hospitals like the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

In fact, medical researchers were particularly interested in treating still-developing LGBTQ youths as a way to refine their techniques for forcing a binary sex on intersex children or carrying out conversion therapy – which aims to coerce a heterosexual or gender-confirming behavioral outcome – on gay children.

In this climate, Lane’s father may have unwittingly saved her from a harmful attempt at “corrective” surgery or hormones to try to prevent her from being trans. Even though Lane left home at age 18 to live as a woman, she would have to wait over a decade before finally obtaining access to hormones and surgery in the mid-1950s.

Trans childhoods before trans medicine

The struggles of trans children in the era before modern transgender medicine show not just how trans youths are far from a new phenomenon, but also how tenacious and forward-thinking they were compared with their parents and doctors.

Two stories of other trans people like Lane show how clinicians’ refusal to let them transition never stopped them from being trans. Both of them found their way to the Johns Hopkins Hospital, which, during the first seven decades of the 20th century, was widely regarded as the one institution in the U.S. for people with questions about their sex and gender.

When psychologists at Johns Hopkins interviewed a retired trans woman from the Midwest in 1954, she told them about her childhood in the 1890s. Even then, without any concept or term for being trans, this woman – by then in her 60s – told them it was obvious to her that she was a girl.

“I wanted a doll and buggy very much,” she reminisced of her intense attachment to the toys given only to girls. While her wish to be a girl never waned, her life had never afforded her the opportunity to transition to living full time as a woman until she retired.

Five years later, the clinicians at Johns Hopkins met a trans man who was then in his 30s. He had come to them seeking top and bottom surgery. Growing up in rural upstate New York in the 1930s, he had been forced to drop out of school “because of the excruciating sense of embarrassment at being obliged to wear girls’ clothes.”

Unlike the trans woman from the Midwest, this trans man, as a teenager, found a path to living openly as a boy: manual labor at a lumber mill. By working in a men’s profession and proving his masculinity through showcasing his strength, his presentation as a boy was embraced by his community. Decades later, he sought out the doctors at Hopkins only to confirm what had long been true in his life: that he was a man.

Growing up despite every obstacle

Each of these three children – like the countless more from this early 20th-century era – had to wait until adulthood to finally transition.

Yet the failure of doctors and other gatekeepers to stop them from transitioning as children, and their inability to access any form of gender-affirming medical treatment, hardly prevented them from being trans or growing up to be trans adults.

This is all the more remarkable given that before the 1950s, very few Americans had access to any concept or information about trans life. While small communities of adult trans people are evident as far back as the turn of the 20th century, most children would not have had access to these discreet social worlds, which tended to exist in major cities like New York and San Francisco. Without any media to supposedly influence them and without role models, these remarkable young people were able to stay true their inner feelings en route to living trans lives.

They’re a reminder that conversion therapy, attempts to suppress or limit transness and gatekeeping through legislation don’t work.

They didn’t work a century ago and they won’t work today.

Hopefully one day there will be a better way to treat trans people, but at the moment, hormones and chopping or stuffing shit is the only way.

Quite a few trannies have above average testosterone. It has nothing to do with that.
The "way to treat" trans people was not to set up a industrial complex of mengele tier 'researchers' 'surgeons' and 'doctors' to manipulate and permanently damage people, it was to set up ways to give them therapy for their body dysphoria insecurities. Transitioning does not help people. It doesn't switch someone to the other sex. It creates a mangled fascmile of what they think they want to be. When that doesn't match up with the reality they will mostly go into a deep spiral.

This is a complicated subject.

One one hand, kids tend to be too stupid to understand themselves and they might end up doing irreversible damage on themselves by hormones and genital mutilation, plus a lot of deranged millenials are parents and made their kids think they are trans.

On the other hand, boys with gender dysphoria can only ever pass and look like actual woman if they prevent their testosterone from turning them into balding bearded gorrilas with a truck driver's voice, they will forever suffer from body dysphoria which sucks as many fatasses here can relate.

Could there even be a middle ground in any way?
No, see, it really isn't, it's just puffed up to be that way. After obergefell v hodges, all the bleeding heart activists were staring at unemployment, so they had to find another social ill windmill to tilt at. People confused about their sex (not gender) were the easiest choice and can be shoehorned into the lgb tent with little effort, so they went with that. The galaxy brains in big pharma saw the easiest gravy train in their history, and set about tweaking the malleable liberal minds in corporate culture and left wing politics, and here we are with yet another wedge issue lazy politicians and wannabe "journalists" (read: overpaid self absorbed bloggers of both political sides) can use to pad their lifestyle.

The whole damn thing is a fucking scam. Kids shouldn't be coddled with their wildest ambitions, their minds aren't developed enough to understand the ramifications of their choices, and the parents who use their kids to score proggie brownie points to try and be holier than thou should be subject to mass ridicule.

Puberty blocking hormones should be totally illegal, and any black market for them should be swiftly dealt with.

I'm normally a live and let live kind of guy, but the trans nonsense needs to stop, it doesn't help anyone, least of all the confused people who just want to figure out who they are. Playing calvinball with the easily coerced is nothing new, but it's never been right.

I disagree with the notion that transitioning doesn't help. In fact, it does help, especially(and kinda sadly, because of the obvious problems) when transitioning younger. There is a reason why large pharmaceutical companies are sponsoring proposals to ban transitioning before age 18, it obviously isn't out of the kindness of their heart, it's because they know it causes people to develop depression, anxiety, and other mental issues that they can use to make more money off of it. And yes I agree that that hormones will never fully fix any tranny, even hormones early on (around the time of puberty starting) can only affect secondary sex characteristics (bone structure is the main one that cannot be reversed after development) and will never fix primary characteristics. But it still helps.
clearly not above average enough. There's probably also ways to reduce estrogen production as well, but I can't be assed to google it right now
Goalpost moving and knowing (and trying not to learn) about a subject is based and retardpilled.

I didn't move any goalposts. I said testosterone treatment until they stop being trannies. Reducing estrogen production was an afterthought. The goalposts remain at "make the tranny no longer a tranny."
If you put even the tiniest amount of research into why gender dysphoria may occur, the most likely explanation at this time is most likely a hormone imbalance in the womb, late enough that it doesn't affect the reproductive system or anything like that but it does change how the brain forms, ergo causing the brain to be not totally one or the other sex's. This would help you realize that at the moment, there is no way to change the structure of the brain unnaturally(by hormones or by surgery).

I wouldn't recommend the penis reversal surgery to my worst enemy, I rather try to convice the MtF to go all the way with everything except that, even if they can never accept the sausage and having it makes them feel horrible, it can't be worst than a gaping, infected axe would that perpetually smells like feces.

You would have a point if we weren't talking about a very serious mental illness, gender disphoria has nothing to do with sexuality (being gay and stuff) but its intead similar to rare and dangerous mental conditions like that one that will force people to amputate one of their own limbs to be able to finally live a peaceful life.
It getting shoehorned into a political agenda is unrelated to mental disorder itself, and this people geniunely can only enjoy life if they transition (the ones with gender disphoria, not the ones with autogynephilia).
So the issue is how far can we allow trans kids to go, specially in modern days without ending up making life ruining mistakes.

Ok. Maybe I was a tad dismissive of your stance, but to say I don't have a point at all is more than a little blasé, and that irks me slightly when it comes to this topic so I'll reply.

Do you treat someone with a disorder like anorexia by feeding into their mental space and enabling their disorder by withholding food from them? No, you don't.
Do you treat a schizotypal person by telling them that yes they are a fire truck for this hour and give them a bowl of diesel? No, you don't.

I completely agree that the problem is full of nuance. And as far as an adult goes, hey, your life, bud.

I draw the line at children. Puberty blockers, even though they may mean a life as a "happy" transgender individual, are an evil. They deprive that child of a choice later in their life. And that's all it really comes down to is someone condoning the lack of that. The issue is that and only that.

All you really need to know about trans people generally are from those who detranstioned. The loud activist trans rights types are fucking sheep. The ones pushing hardest for it are in the pocket of big pharma, and people like you are doing their bidding by trying to muddy the waters of a very clear issue.

To try and live as the sex opposite to the one you were born as should never be an easy task, and that's really what being "transgender" actually is. The thing is, until someone comes up with a way to switch sexes completely, anyone who wants to go down that path will be perpetually in a state of that transition. And therefore, never actually achieve the goal. That makes for very useful sad pawns and a reason to fight for bleeding heart libtards, but no actual happiness for anyone except those who line their pockets at the expense of both parties being used.

I trust that this illuminates the point I was making earlier to greater effect. And if you still choose to deny the facts and live your narrative, well....

Pick one or both.

I'd also like names of these historic trannies.

You're telling me some chick said "I'm a man!" and marched right over to the local lumber mill, looked the supervisor right in the eyes and gave him a firm manly handshake and got a job doing man stuff just like that in the 1940s? Sounds more like all the men were probably off in the Pacific and Europe and if some young lady wanted to get her hands dirty when beggars couldn't be choosers they said "eh sure kid."
This is all assuming the story is genuine and not largely/entirely fabricated.

Frankly I'm suffering from tranny-fatigue but more importantly the people pushing this nonsense need to be beat and I mean that. Let's say the early hormone therapy does benefit a few people who think they're the opposite sex... what about the kids whose lives it ruins? Why aren't they ever considered? Which are there more of?

These people don't care about children or their future, they just care about their agenda of normalizing transgenderism and other such issues and kids are the most susceptible and receptive to such abuses because they're told to trust professional adults more often than not. It's a terrible thing to do perpetuated by vile people.

It's a fetish.
I wanted to elaborate further after you responded. But since you seem to be content with giving me a sticker, I'll just do so unprompted:
There is a high comorbidity with autism and transgenderism. This actually meshes pretty well with the comorbidity between autism and hypersexuality including transvestic disorders and plently of other paraphilias (pedophilia being one of them, oops).

Believe it or not: I have done a good bit of research on this topic. You implying that my claims come from not doing "the tiniest amount of research" is laughable. Transgenderism (at least in males) seems to stem from fetishization of transitioning rather than any innate need. More research is required for F2M's as this model simply does not fit. But they are also much rarer. I would suggest a completely different mechanism of action between one and the other.

Decades? No, trans kids were seeking the government's help with mutilating their genitals for centuries, if not millenia. Perhaps the very reason why the universe exists at all is so that the trans kids can have their dicks chopped of, courtesy of taxpayers' money. We should finally get rid of the white supremacist myth that kids want to play with legos, and accept the scientific truth that what kids really want is to self-mutilate their genitals, inject puberty blockers and live with rotting gaping wounds for the rest of their lives

The capacity for lego models to be disassembled and reassembled into something completely new is a metaphor for children deconstructing their gender in an attempt to form something entirely them. The pegs on top being inserted into the holes on the bottom of each piece is an inherently sexual demonstration that power much be exerted to enact change.
Legos are inherently both queer and revolutionary.

Just read up on the articles (also please read some of the articles the second one was cited by, im not shitting on it, just a funny observation). While yes it is very very obvious that there a high comorbidity between gender dysphoria and autism (even knowing a bunch makes it obvious) the idea that gender dysphoria is a fetish is beyond retarded. While I can't pull anything up (read: im too lazy) I can assure you that the idea in and of itself being a fetish is popularized by Dr. Blanchard who is a self-confessed tranny chasing (totally not projecting) kike who hasn't changed his theory in 40 years despite evidence to the contrary. The fact the people like Kevin Gibes believe in his shit should be proof further as to why you shouldn't believe his bullcrap.

I am willing to accept that some trans people, whether due to mental illness or to genuine belief have existed throughout history. I’ll even put aside the snark and take at face value that treatments were helpful.

That’s still ignoring the fact that there is clearly a group of people in the last 5 or so years putting forth a concerted effort to convince children that they are in need of this treatment even if they never suffered from these problems before being told they did. If you want to convince me the treatment is necessary, then convince me you can separate the ones who are genuinely “ill” from the ones being “”misdiagnosed””.
