It's been going on for a long, long time. My sister and her husband brought it back with them from San Diego around 2003. They'd been Canadian'ing niggos for years before that.

Unless they started it, I assume they picked it up from some other hippy out there.

The fact no one has spilled the beans for this long is a testament to the memetic nimbleness of Americans.

There's a guy named Sean whose Twitch channel I can't remember at the moment. Dude was born with some kind of bone disease I think and has to play games with his chin and tongue. Don't think he has any kind of opinions publicly about that shit, but he pretty much runs circles around people who want games to be made easier for accessibility. Dude's beaten all 3 Dark Souls games, Sekiro, most of the Castlevanias, the SNES Star Wars games, pretty much anything anyone could consider hard he's down to try. Even if it's "just" games it's badass he can set a goal like that and overcome it.
