No, the surgeon uses the muscles of the thigh area to create a flap, which is sewn over the end of the femur before the skin on the stump is closed. There's a discussion of technique here; no graphic photos, just text. I guess it's possible, but it would require an enormous amount of force, just like it would take to cause your thigh bone to come out through your skin.When I think of AKA prosthetics, I can't help but picture the weight of the person's body pushing down on their skeleton. forcing the thigh bone right through the soft stump like a sword. Is that ever a concern?
The stump is sensitive, especially at first, and needs to be monitored very closely for sores or pressure spots from the suction socket. It's not really "soft", though, at least not so soft that a bone could just push through. There's usually quite a bit of scar tissue there, both internal and external, and that can be pretty gristly.
