An 11-year-old autistic boy who has been missing for five days in had researched online 'how to hide from police' before he vanished and sparked a massive search.

Ryan Larsen has been missing since he walked out of his elementary school in the Omaha suburb of Vista on Monday.

Police say a search of the Larsen family computer revealed the boy had recently looked up 'hiding from the police,' 'hiding underground' and 'how to avoid being spotted.'

The and Center for Missing and Exploited Children have since joined the search as it entered its fifth day.

La Vista Police Captain Jeremy Kinsey said the sixth-grader, who has autism, was 'high functioning' and that had a history of running away and hiding.

Police say they have no reason to believe Ryan was abducted.

'He likes to hide in the weirdest spots,' Kinsey said. 'He could very well be watching us right now, laughing at us.

'He's playing the ultimate game of hide and seek on us now and he's winning.'

Police said they were worried about food, water and Ryan's medications.

'We have a list of what medications he's on. We've talked to doctors about the effects of those medications, and that's concerning, that some of the things that he needs to be on,' police chief Bob Lausten said.

'You can still survive without those meds, but it helps you cope with the different things that are out there.'

Authorities are working with the FBI and autism experts to try and predict what his current mindset might be.

Police say they have scaled back their search efforts to prevent Ryan from being frightened if he spots a large group of people together.

They acknowledged that the boy doesn't like to be spoken to, especially by strangers.

The search has been centered near his home, as well as nearby parks that Ryan regularly goes to.

'I promise you we've thought of checking trash cans and parked cars,' Kinsey said.

Ryan vanished from Papillion-La Vista School while transitioning from one classroom to another at about noon on Monday.

The school, which does not have surveillance cameras, said a teacher noticed within five minutes that he was missing.

'They immediately began to search the building to see where he was and then notified Ryan's mom and the police immediately,' a school spokesperson said.

'I can't think of anything more heartbreaking as a parent or a staff member than having to look for a child.'

Police described Ryan as white, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He was wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, an Old Navy shirt and was carrying a polka-dot umbrella when he vanished.

This whole article seems a little bit to upbeat to be about a child that's been missing for almost a week. Maybe I am a bit humourless but if my child had been missing for 5 days I'd not be joking about it to the newspaper.
I thought it was charming until I realized they still hadn't found the guy. Holy shit, get it together folks. Mild PL, but back in GA I had a neighbor who's special needs little girl pulled a similiar stunt. We lived next to a big lake. She didnt make it.
Where do you think you're posting?

We're enthusiastic admirers at best.

He could be being butt blasted by a hobo or easy prety for some older teenage sociopath. Some 3 guys 1 hammer with an autist.

This article is way to optimistic for a kid who's been missing for a week. Doesn't "search and rescue" become "recovery" after 3 days or so?

That surprised me too. There's a lot that can go wrong with a mentally-disabled child on his own for that long: fallen in a water body, attacked by animals (dogs, coyotes), stuck somewhere due to a severe injury (broken leg, for example), entered a confined space with no oxygen, fallen off of something, etc.

It's weird they've scaled back search efforts.

What if his parents are tards too, and like I insinuated before, too stupid to Maddie McCann/Casey Anthony it and sob for the cameras? What are the chances he's dead and buried out in the backyard because his parents didn't want to take care of a sped anymore? Maybe they scaled back because they know that now it's unlikely he's going to be alive.
Fucking braindead journalists are all collectively seeing this as "LOL GAME OF MANHUNT LOL" instead of a sped with poor fucking pre-planning and a habit of running off. An adult as spedly as he seems to be doesn't have a good chance alone, outdoors, with no food or water for a week, much less someone a little older than ten. I'll be slamming my head against a wall when they collectively shift gears to "11 year old special needs nebraska boy found dead after week long manhunt" and sob and cry about how horrible it is.

Found a copy of his missing poster, he's got tard strength. 5'8 125lbs and not even twelve yet. The bad/good news is, at least the cops are treating this with a little more tact and assume he's dead.

I thought the article was going to end with them having found him after a few days with a bag of snacks and a huge water bottle. The article is bizzare in its tone. Poor little guy. I hope he's fine but it's looking quite grim.

The cop who made the comment about this child playing and winning the "ultimate game of hide and seek" probably feels like an absolute jackass right now.

Bringing out cadaver dogs and lowering creek levels indicates they aren't optimistic. Poor kid.

So I thought they found him. But it's was another kid. Anyway, it looks bad. They are going to lower the water level at Walnut Creek.

LA VISTA, Neb. —
On Sunday, the search for 11-year-old Ryan Larsen entered its seventh day.

The Nebraska State Patrol issued an Endangered Missing Advisory for the La Vista boy after he walked out of La Vista West Elementary on Monday around noon.

Authorities say Larsen has autism. He's described as being 5 feet, 8 inches tall, around 125 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. Ryan was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, an Old Navy shirt and had a polka-dotted umbrella.

The Papio-Missouri Natural Resources District announcd Sunday it will lower the water level at Walnut Creek Recreation Area. Divers searched the water Saturday, lowering the water level will allow them better access both physically and visually to it going forward.

Law enforcement did not extensively search the area Sunday, instead regrouping and focusing on investigative efforts.

If you have any information on Larsen's location, call 911.

Latest Developments

Saturday evening:

The search for Ryan Larsen has reached a sixth day.

Dozens of first responders joined efforts with the La Vista Police Department Saturday to help look for the missing 11-year-old boy who left La Vista West Elementary Monday afternoon.

Ryan was last seen at his family's apartment complex near 84th and Harrison on Monday.

More than six miles away, law enforcement continues to block off the Walnut Creek Recreation Area in search of Ryan.

The recreation area has been blocked off for multiple days now.

KETV NewsWatch 7's Abbie Petersen spotted golf carts and search dogs at the recreation area.

Petersen also noticed at least three boats go into a body of water at the recreation area.

La Vista police have said they will not provide another live press briefing this weekend unless Ryan has been found or they have new concrete information to share.

No volunteers are currently needed in the search, but anyone who wishes to help can make a donation to the Salvation Army of Omaha or to the National Center for Missing or Exploited Children. Both groups are helping with search efforts.

Friday evening:

Numerous law enforcement agencies are continuing to search for Ryan Larsen, who has not been seen since Monday, May 17.

According to a news release La Vista police, teams from the following joined the search for Ryan at Walnut Creek Recreation Area:

  • Sarpy County Search & Rescue
  • Nebraska State Patrol
  • Omaha Fire & Rescue
  • Yutan
  • Des Moines
The above agencies have stepped in to offer divers, boats, high-tech equipment and tracking K9s, according to the news release.

A police K9 picked up a scent at Walnut Creek Recreation Area, but it is too early to determine if the scent is animal, human, or something else.

According to police, crews began searching at Walnut Creek Recreation Area because Ryan and his family visited it. Police said Ryan previously wandered off while visiting the recreation area.

Crews will be searching both land and water at Walnut Creek Recreation Area until they either find him at the recreation area or officials can rule out that he is there, police said. Officials are asking that the public find an alternate path or recreation area to use as crews continue to search the area.

La Vista police uses the See It, Say, It, Send It app to gather tips. For information about the app, go to https://www.seeandsend.info.

(Friday afternoon)

At 3 p.m., La Vista police reiterated that the search continues to be focused on the Walnut Creek area. They said this is because it's an area Larsen has run to before. An Omaha dive team is searching the water. They are using sonar technology to search the water as well.

La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten said there is no information to indicate there is anyone in the water, officials are just checking all the boxes.

Matt Sutter, with Nebraska State Patrol, warned that the Endangered Missing Advisory for Larsen will be expiring soon, but that is only because these must expire after 72 hours.

La Vista police said this does not mean search efforts will diminish.

Lausten said that La Vista police have a relationship with Larsen. He said multiple officers knew him personally.

"Ryan had brought us Christmas gifts at Christmas so there's a relationship that we have, you know with him specifically, and it cuts, it cuts deep," he said.

He said there will be a focus on mental health for the officers.

"These guys or gals are working their tails off on this. Sleep? What is sleep? They don't even care about sleep, they're there, they're running, they're doing everything that they need to do," he said.

Lausten said he is worried that Larsen has become stuck somewhere where he was hiding.

He said that officials will notify the public as soon as possible if Ryan is found.

So search dogs have a scent near the creek. It's been a week and they haven't found this kid. So it's not a very good sign at all.

Police say a search of the Larsen family computer revealed the boy had recently looked up 'hiding from the police,' 'hiding underground' and 'how to avoid being spotted.'
Just like how Casey Anthony smartly googled "foolproof suffocation"?
Police say they have no reason to believe Ryan was abducted.
So they're just letting underage tards waltz out of public institutions at their leisure now?
'They immediately began to search the building to see where he was and then notified Ryan's mom and the police
No father in this picture, of course.

There was a lady recently found in the grand canyon or something right? Like she had been missing for a long time but she actually survived. Used the environment to keep healthy like drinking rain water or something.

Kid here is unfortunately not as intelligent as that lady though. Hope he isn't stuck in a hole or something.

I think he will be alive. If he's near a creek he has water to drink and animals to rip apart with his bare hands to eat.
"Don't go down by Walnut Creek. You'll see torn apart animals, partially eaten. There's a creature out there, some say it's a man, but it's not.
"It's a tard."
"At night you can sometimes hear it off in the distance."
"REEEEEEEEE!"
