The no fly list exists exclusively for terrorism suspects. It's a tiny list, ~50k. I think it's far more likely that he's not on the list and that the airport employee he talked to misspoke or he is lying.

People are put on the list all the time, sometimes accidentally, sometimes because the government mixes up people. If you think it's a completely above board only high profile terrorist watch list, you are too naïve to how government operates or how many errors government bureaucrats make. You can be put on that list for any reason, you are not presumed innocent, you have no recourse for removal.
