I can explain it to you Bob in three simple points:

1. Heavily copying anything is lazy and makes the product worse. Even if the original is something great.
2. Despite what you think, SMB3 isn't the best platform to be made. Not even for the side-scrolling format. Maybe it is in contention for best for that era. But it is far from the best.
3. It is 2021 Bob. Platformers have evolved drastically since 1988. Basing your game heavily off a game from 33 years ago is stupid.

Oh, no. Tiniest of powerlevels, I used to be subbed to the developer's Youtube channel because I genuinely enjoyed the game called Midboss. This game is a reskin of the dev's last game, an SMB clone where Super Bernie beats Trump-Bowser to win the White House. Link goes to a speedrun instead of the dev's channel because the fastest dose possible is recommended. Also, holy shit someone speedran this.

It's a low-tier dev who went from free and simple indie games to a propaganda clone with a "Donate to Bernie" link on the main page (which aged like milk because he retired to one of his mansions with a hearty "No refunds!" maybe a month after the release - the link still worked, though) who has now filed the serial numbers off to try sell the damn thing. Also, one look at SocialBlade shows the dev has negative video views in July 2020, a result of purging Bernie content except one trailer (which has had comments turned off).

So yeah, while I imagine most people dumping on it are for being Newgrounds-tier on a PS5 (great buy, that console) if you find anyone truly passionate about dumping on it, it's probably because they remember that fiasco too. This game is just not important enough to hate unless there's a history.

That was a blatant SMB1 clone though. This game is really obviously not the same game, but it still has absolutely no soul or personality because it borrows from everything the dev likes, directly. Unfortunately, directly ripping off things people like seems to be what sells to the brain dead crowd, and that's something in no shortage on the internet.

Slight power-level here, but my father is/was a mechanical engineer like Chris and so old-school that he used a drafting board before AutoCAD became common place. It's quite the contrast between him and Chris. Dad's employer laid him off back when I was in middle school so what did he do before there was Twitter and Patreon? He started his own business and did his best to put food on our table. I can only imagine stress he must've been under--I mean, we were a two-income household, but he was determined to make it work. I hate to admit it, but I was more like Bob back then so I probably gave him a lot of unnecessary grief.
