Jamaica was a particularly depraved location. This might have been true in the United States, but chattel slavery was still bad. It may have been viewed in general as terrible behavior, but nothing actually happened to the perps. This is why there were so many deadly slave rebellions like Nat Turner's.

Nat's was the most famous, but there were numerous occasions where enslaved blacks rose up and killed everyone they possibly could before they were stopped, much like the Spartacus rebellion ended up with the crucifixion of thousands on the Appian Way.

Honestly can't believe the takes in the early bits of this, like it's the reaction of a literal child at a museum field trip.

You can google the small-peepee-Greek-statue thing and in like a minute understand why. And that reason - the split between the physical and the intellectual, stateliness and libido, using your brain vs using your body - is actually a good way of getting into understanding their viewpoint, the way they saw the world, and the way they saw each other. That's, like, the whole point of studying anything in history or art.
