Id be surprised if Nurie ever looks nourished. A childhood of food deprivation can commonly lead to being an underweight adult, even when food is readily available. They wouldn't even tell her what "bad stuff" is, lest Satan have nested himself in her and told her things like, "you don't have to be a subservient wife and baby factory" or "you can get an education and not compromise your morals".
Mostly, the kids seemed shit terrified of Jill. They're all walking on eggshells lest they get the switch, or yet another day without food. Jill and David firmly believe in the transformative power of fasting - for the kids, silly! - and obviously they've employed it liberally.
Nurie has been away from home almost a year and still hasn't gained anything outside the weight of her fetus. Jill's 12 daily phone calls and texts in between are doing their job of scaring Nurie out of eating an ounce more than she "deserves".
The kids might become a “normal weight” away from Jill, but I’d be surprised if any ever get fat or overweight, especially the girls since Jill has drummed the need to be thin into them. The kids have never had enough food to eat for emotional comfort, boredom or pleasure - only bare sustenance.
Feeling hungry or having little food on the stomach is what feels normal to them, so over eating or eating large amounts will feel uncomfortable. It’s similar to how fat kids easily become fat adults due to what feels “normal” to them - emotional eating, eating out of boredom, constantly feeling full.
Nurie fails to see that most African women wear full length smocks or wraps plus head covers out of real necessity. They do this to protect their skin from the insects and sun more than modesty. We can only hope. For African woman a lot of them don’t have anything else to dress in? Not to mention how high the rape count is in those countries. Her daughter doesn’t have to worry about that considering her horse face.
If you live in a country with endemic malaria and all manner of nasty vicious biting insects you too would cover as much skin as possible with thin cotton fabric.
Even the remaining remote tribes in Africa that don’t wear as much clothing slather their bodies in mud and red clay to protect themselves.
