Strype's reputation has been in the gutter for a few years now. At one point he owed over 100 commissions, many of which still remain uncompleted. He became one of those names (like Jailbird) that was equivalent to setting your money on fire because you'd never get the art or your money back.

I still have a few friends that desperately want to commission Strype; some people don't follow a lot of the background drama and just wanna get art from an artist they've wanted to for a long time. Pretty sure that's how these artists keep finding new prey to grift; some casual watcher who only knows about the artist from finding the occasional art post from them finally get enough money for a commission and then the artist just takes the money and runs.

In some cases, they're very aware but continue to commission them. Jailbird gets multiple comments on each of her commission openings from people she's owed for over a decade and she still manages to get people to give her money. Really seems to be an issue revolving around "old guard" artists who've been in the fandom for a substantial amount of time, they become these people's "dream" artists so they're willing to run the risk of buying the art just at the possibility of getting it finished and not being another victim.

Oh of course these artists still get the same dumb paypigs who commission them time and again while still waiting on a rediculous amount of owed commissions. I do know a few people who knowingly still try to commission artists like Jailbird and Strype despite knowing their histories; I just don't consider any of those people friends. People that fall so much in 'love' with a pacticular artist they're willing to just throw money away at them just to get that dream art piece deserve the decades of waiting they get.

Furries are probably where parasocial relationships truly began to form with how common furries orbit creators and have for at least 20 years. If not where it started, then it's at least where it became more finely tuned. But I'm getting off topic.

When Strype started getting called out for his scamming, he actually put the blame on being a diabetic lard ass. The journal is likely gone now but years ago he'd made a lengthy journal about being almost 400lbs and having heart issues.

I won't go into too much detail but I will say I've ran into a few of these people many times on Second Life when I was a degenerate. It's been years and I've long since left, but it's pretty interesting to say the least how expansive some things got for some people. Vixus was somebody I ran into and chatted/interacted with a lot before I disappeared off the face of the planet. (IE: grew up and graduated college and got a real job and life).

I can say though is that the ones I do know mentioned here have always been into trans/ femboy / dickgirl stuff on second life, the fact that it bled over hard into real life is not surprising. I feel like there was a bit of a pipeline from SL to troonism, and incidentally I might have contributed to it with some of the NSFW things that were sold that I had my hand in. Lol.

Edit: I should add that I've fallen far, far out of touch with a lot of this stuff and had been under a rock for most of it for the last 6 years - coming back to all this through Kevin is especially amusing.

Mild PL but labels and suggestions are really powerful. Like if you suggest to a kid they're a bad bad kid even if they're not or that something is their fault even if it's not they internalize it and often live to a label. It's why bullying people or telling them rude shit hurts self esteem. Similarly if you're a confused person or mentally ill and someone with an opinion suggests "maybe you're xyz (trans, dissociative identity, schizo etc.)" Even if they're NOT sometimes the placebo is strong enough to make people live to that label. I agree with @Meiwaku but I also think this shows you how insanely suggestible these people are. If you have a secure sense of yourself and your life is going well, you don't fall for this shit. Cults appeal to people whose sense of reality is weakened by mental illness and fragility, and whose lives are generally in the shitter. It happened with Heaven's Gate. That one also got crazier over time as less suggestible members were filtered out and found ways to leave. In the end, you're left with like 5 die-hards who behave in increasingly extreme ways.
