Inactive Andrew Dobson / Tom Preston / CattyN - STOP DOING SEXIST CRAP

I wonder if that was him genuinely being too lazy to make a character sheet and sticking with it or him adopting that stance once people started pointing out how inconsistent shit in Steven Universe is.

Then again, I assume he always had the lazy attitude where he didn't bother to stay consistent in his art and stylized SU into some sacred calf, that he can point at and go "See, they don't care about consistency either!"
It's laziness... first and foremost. Cant be arsed to follow them because he'd rather just draw "close enough", and we should just accept that because 90% of the population can't do better, I guess?

I do know that when pushed to the wall, he argues that the "Squash and Stretch" rule of animation means model sheets are fundamentally unenforceable.

"It's legal to go faster than the speed limit if it would avoid an accident, so therefore speed limits are fundamentally unenforceable."
Yeah, sounds like something he'd say, honestly.

crossposting from the Moviebob thread, wherein Moviebob posted a screenshot of Altered Beast (Bear Transformation, which is the worst Transformation) to twitter, I did a little lazy photoshop (Dobson doesn't deserve anything more lol):

Rate me late and gay if this has already been mentioned, but in my Internet travels concerning Dobson I discovered that he apparently submitted some of his Danny and Spot comics to a webcomic contest The Escapist was holding in 2010:

They gave him some pretty generous critique there. He didn’t even make runner-up or honorable mention in the end, and coincidentally this contest was where the webcomic Manly Men Doing Manly Things originated from.

And speaking of Danny and Spot, I found this hilarious Duwang-style parody of one of his strips:

Damn, the guy really never caught a break did he? Nobody likes his art.

Also, Danny's eyes are too big. I know he trying to emulate Takahashi san's art style but she never drew peoples eyes that big unless they are shocked or scared. And even then they aren't that big.

The eyes just bug me out.

His eyes look like they're about to fly out of his sockets.

I think with Danny he was trying to do a pseudo-Jon Arbuckle look with the eyes.

I’m betting that kind of critique the Escapist people gave him probably stung the most for him; it’s not “lol ur art sux kys faggot” so he can’t feel like he’s being victimized by trolls, and it manages to highlight exactly what makes his art so amateurish, even the positive comments (the ones pointing out how G-rated and simple the comics are in particular). Meanwhile there’s the winner and the honorable mentions running circles around him in talent and humor execution, but that’s par for the course for him; he was never on the same playing field as his peers and never would be, because he staunchly refused to grow, mentally and skill-wise. It’s why his fanbase was always children who didn’t know any better.
What’s even more sad and pathetic is that I suspect the comics he submitted weren’t new; he started making Danny and Spot comics like two years before this contest, so I’m also willing to bet instead of drawing comics specifically for the contest he recycled what he had laying around for it.

I never noticed his hands but GOD DAMN
People usually focus on the atrocious eyebrows and some such stuff, but the hands are also something that Dobson just could never get right.
Drawing hands is arguably more difficult than drawing a face, if only cause there aren't many ways to stylize hands without turning them into weird sausage-like appendages.
You can easily break down a face to a point where this: :C is a very basic shape, but still defined enough to be recognized as a face, even though it's just two dots and a line.
If you want to abstract down a hand, your understanding of the hand's anatomy and the way how to simplify that and make it look nice needs to be very good.

Hands are a great example for the saying "You need to know the rules to break the rules". It's a lot about sizes, shapes, proportions. And Dobson always just drew weird lumps with basic shapes indicating where a finger might be.

Kinda like the time he released some horrible fanart in a Steven Universe fanzine and literal nobodies a quarter his age blew his fridge art out of the water by comparison.
Dobson, being an artist in his late 30s with 2 decades of """experience""" on top of a professional art education, was not only being bested by 15 year old randos, it was also an infernal beacon of his failure on a professional level, cause after all his time as an artist, after all his training and education, the best he could do, the literal pinnacle of his art career, was being published in a fanzine. Alongside literal nobodies. Who all made better art than him.

And that is why Dobson is a "CareerCow".

What’s even more sad and pathetic is that I suspect the comics he submitted weren’t new; he started making Danny and Spot comics like two years before this contest, so I’m also willing to bet instead of drawing comics specifically for the contest he recycled what he had laying around for it.
Just adding insult to injury. He sent in the cream of the crop and got a lukewarm "yeah thanks but no thanks. You're not even consolation prize material." in return.

O...M...G! Even in his submission, he was bitching about the errors he got trying to submit the comic! Sure, that's the way to win over the people running it, Dobby. Bitch about their clunky website (which was probably something on his end or something he did wrong)!

The Danny character kind of surprises me for two reasons. First I thought it was a girl. Given Dobson's predilections, it would have been par for the course. Second, the character is blonde, which I thought was something he didn't like since his personal bully was a blonde guy.

I see another common lolcow trait:

They want to make cartoons, but have to settle for making comics because they can't make animation.

And the comics they create help make them lolcows.
