Twenty years ago, expectations were for sufficient food, and television access. Ten years ago it was specifically healthy, fresh food, with internet access and a smartphone. Today, its Organic non-GMO food and exotic 'superfoods' from across the globe, with high speed internet, and flagship phones with unlimited access plans.
Expectations for what people should get as baseline keep rising, and they will continue to keep rising.

Odds are who ever the Democrats are consulting with are just telling them what they want to hear. Either because bureaucracy filters out information the higher ups don't want to hear or their presentation of the data is bad so what needs to be communicated isn't getting across.
Then again I think most of our elected officials are cloistered within so many rings of people that they haven't actually talked to anyone who wasn't vetted three times and told specifically what to say.
Alternatively they are listening too well to their particular consultants that keep coming up with contradictory information. Their political instincts may have been blunted since residing in the swamp and not actually having to compete since forever. Democrats can't separate the signal from the noise anymore.

They're trying their damnedest to reverse course and, as you postulated, simultaneously force a direction shift in their messaging - possibly thinking that they can get the ACAB types to follow them in reversing course. They obviously can't, because the monster has been out of control for some time now, but I get the distinct feeling that it's the only card they have to play in this situation to desperately try and keep the vehicle that is the DNC from rocketing off the cliff it's swiftly approaching.
Separately, for all the talk of people like Cruz or DeSantis running for pres or as VP, I'll put it bluntly that while I obviously don't have a way of gauging the wider public opinion on this, I as someone who voted twice for Trump absolutely will not, under any circumstances vote for him again if he were to choose yet another establishment tool as his VP. Better to vote Biden so we can have the collapse and get it over with than to continue this farcical game of pretending that we're not a dying, corrupt husk of an empire that once held promise.
