Small side note: If ashes are going to be shipped abroad to the persons family, they're usually in a container that has a threaded lid. It's a bit embarassing otherwise when the lid comes off mid shipment and the remains wind up in the box.
The picture shows an urn, but as others have said it doesn't prove there's anything in it. Empirically it makes more sense to say 'nice urn' than 'nice urn with contents' based on this picture alone.

Which raises the question of 'bring your own urn' cremations being a thing? Then you could imagine a scenario where some people (colleagues) ordered an urn, took it out of a box, took a picture and then... potentially did something with the urn later on. It's all guesswork.
One minor thing that strikes me as odd about the urn photo, shouldn't the photographer's reflection be larger?
No. Photographically the picture is sound. The horizontal distortion of the photographer reflection is minimal as the surface normals of the urn are almost 180º opposite the camera's direction here.

The lid is curved gently on top, which makes the shoulders and heads appear compressed vertically as the normals shy away from the photographer and more towards the ceiling.

Judging by the picture, the photographer's camera was above the lid (what you'd expect standing in front of a table) and pretty much dead-center horizontally. Look at the green shape in my analysis here:

People aren't buying it in the nesdev crowd even if they're not publicly saying as much.
Can you elaborate on that? I haven't lurked on the nesdev forums in some time, but a hundred or so pages ago someone posted screencaps from a thread about byuu there and they all seemed to buy the story and blame KF for his death. Even a couple of the oldbies like Tepples seemed convinced. I have a lof of respect for the old guard of the emulation community (even byuu), so what I saw was disappointing, to say the least.

Are we supposed to ignore that you took the original picture and shopped in people and lightining? For someone with no skin in the game, you sure did put in effort

Congratulations KiwiFarms..

No skin in the game. But the pic by @Wayne Beckett isn't obviously shopped and has at least three people seemingly standing in a crematorium or other business-y environment. It's not a lone wolf action.

Why is there so much fucking artifacting around the text?

EDIT: I'm leaning towards "Not shopped." It's possible that it could be, but after looking at it closely, it looks way too well done for any of these bozos to have done it.

I may be stupid but I think that just tends to happen when theres an obvious color/shade difference. The contrast of black text against the white background and such.
I suppose it's possible. The compression conveniently also makes it easy to hide an edit, although the image need not be Photoshopped in order for this to be a fakery as others have pointed out I'm sure.

Most likely scenario is this guy became stressed and overwhelmed (to put it lightly) and snatched on this opportunity to shed the "byuu" persona. Still no confirmation of death whatsoever.

Imagine being alive and seeing these shitlib online rags pump out article after article about your "death" and how "fascists" are responsible.

The thing is -- dudes like this live and breathe the internet. Will he appear online again, and when?

The whole thing is a shame. I liked byuu and enjoyed visiting his site years ago when I was deeper into emulation. He did some great work with some JRPG translations too. Seems like he was a lost soul who couldn't get himself out of a rut, and going down the troon rabbit hole has never done anyone any favors. I just feel sad, honestly.

The forum in question isn't the nesdev forum but an offshoot with a retro-romset-oriented bittorrent tracker that has heavy userbase crossover with it. There's some bad blood with them over very old GoodTools/emulation legality drama so most of the posters there use pseudonyms. I've got no real idea who's who, but there are people with late 200x regdates expressing doubts so I'm fairly certain they must be nesdev/parodius old guard.

E: Skimming the thread, none of them seem to have any information that we don't. I didn't spot the urn photo either but it's not a high traffic forum.

It's cool, thanks for the warm welcome! I thought it would be fun to dive in and at least offer a detail in the picture that nobody picked up on yet (correct me if I'm wrong).

I tried joining the site months ago, but got rejected for using a throwaway e-mail address. My account being new doesn't invalidate the actual finding I posted about.

My knowledge of houses isn't too good I admit, but I have never seen an interior or ceiling like in the picture in regular houses with air conditioning units and a big side window. Might be a regional thing. Disregard the interior comment then, there's still at least three people in the picture which nobody talked about.

(I'm also so new I don't know how to quote here. Flame me some more.)
You should lurk more then. (also pretend it's 4chan, just because you got told to kys doesn't mean you should actually do it. lol.)

I'm going to assume you're not as retarded as you made yourself look just now.

Use any image editing tool with support for either curves, levels, brightness/contrast or exposure adjustments and you'll find these people in the original image. Save as a PNG to prevent recompression artifacts.

If you actually are retarded, I'll handhold you. Open the original JPEG in your image editor. Adjust levels. Move white point to 192. Adjust midpoint to a gamma of 0,25. Observe the result.

Look, I'm a new KF shitposter, not Bob fucking Ross painting in physically and photographically correct people into random snapshots.
Why is there so much fucking artifacting around the text?
Look into the details of JPEG compression. Due to the finite resolution of the DCT you get more artifacts around sharp and contrasting edges compared to smoother gradients.

As far as real forensics go the image appears fully intact and unedited.

I know my way around, but thanks for the advice!

I don’t understand why you all are being so autistic about the urn photo. We’ve already established that anyone can buy an urn and have writing put on it. And it’s such a plain urn, it was probably really cheap.
I need a new cookie jar and it's the perfect shape for my needs. I'm hoping I can find out where it's sold so I can get one.

You are probably right on both counts. But it takes a special kind of crazy to have such an urn made and have 2 (or more) people come over to a non-house, office-y place and take a picture with it. Like, why? The picture disproves that it was a 'for the lulz' solo prank, so it has a bit more weight in my opinion.
