Some of the British spellings are because spellcheck. The browser I'm currently using believes I'm an American, so centre & colour gets marked wrong and center & color is right. I heard something like that too. To add in my own thoughts, I think it also stems from their defiance against the Christian conservative upbringings some of them might have had growing up.
