From what I've noticed in the more """legitimate""" cases - ie not just a bitter child obsessed with cartoons/some asshole desperate for attention - it's a coping mechanism to self-rationalize their extreme differences in moods.
It's worse than that, it's often a coping mechanism that's developed from extreme childhood abuse, usually repeated and sustained rape as a child. It's extremely rare to the point that it's still a controversial diagnosis with many members of the psychiatric community not supporting it's existence. The "personalities" aren't aware of each other and there's often no obvious change to an outsider.
Normally, I loathe long text posts because more often than not someone is blathering on without actually having anything meaningful to say.
