Valve introduces Steam Deck

Because there is literally no difference between a Steam Machine and someone buying the parts at a local PC store and building their own. Last time I checked going to a PC store to buy parts to build custom handhelds isn't a thing.
My point was that Valve got burned out from working with other manufacturers, something similar happened later with them and HTC, i don't remember the exact details, but it led to Valve making the Index by themselves instead of collaborating again with HTC.

The only garbage part were the UMD movies, but you weren't forced to buy any.
IIRC UMD movies were Sony's way of trying to launch a portable disc format to license out to other manufacturers, but nobody took them up on it because it was such a retarded idea. I never even heard about any plans for any other UMD player.

But that was their long game idea, making UMDs the new standard for portable video akin to Minidisc being the standard for portable music, while totally ignoring how new models of the iPod could play videos and had big enough hard drives to hold a couple dozen movies. Or, you know, how nobody wants to watch an entire movie on a 4" screen. Or how they retailed at around $25 when the DVD of the same movie was $15, plus extra features.

UMD video was low key a big funny failure that nobody talks about, and I bought some when they made it to the dollar store, and there's really nothing special about them at all.

You talking about that version made by Majesco? If so, A. That variant was made long after the Genesis was discontinued. B. It also didn't do very well. It was originally sold for 50 bucks, but dropped to 20 because literally nobody wanted one. C. It literally cannot play certain games. I'm not just talking about the CD and 32X shit, I mean some dyed-in-the-wool Genesis games don't fucking work on the thing (Virtua Racing and Gargoyles being the most notable ones).
there were a few more, point being it didn't affect the genesis.

same way steam deck won't be affected if someone makes a clone, at the end of the day it's just a normal pc in a handheld form factor, steam is still the dominating pc storefront. there's a possibility that if the market gets flooded with cheap copies of the deck that run like ass it will have an adverse effect on the whole thing, but since it's still pc games and graphical options are expected (if not outright required to sell as many copies as possible) you can just turn everything down and games are still gonna work to some extend.

how many vertical games are there? how many players of those?

it's a simple cost/benefit calculation, nothing more.
Well, all we have to do is compare Switch sales to Steam Deck sales, and then we will have irrefutable scientific proof that vertical support is essential. I'd really like to believe it's simple economics driving this and not some sort of Jewish plot, but experience makes me wary. Critical race theorists don't want you playing Donkey Kong properly.

@Calandrino have you considered just building out a vertical arcade cabinet at home? Maybe just modding an Arcade1Up with your own controls and computer? Some of them come with a rotated 1280x1024 monitor
It's no big deal to rotate a PC monitor.

I really hope this does well because turning consoles into open PCs is what the world needs, not turning the PC into consoles. and fuck windows. my preorder is for Q2 so I will wait and see if the linux compatibility actually works and if it is powerful enough to run the games I'm waiting on. UUOOOHHH ELDEN RING
Honestly besides a few surface similarities (price and mobility), I can’t see the Deck really competing with the Switch in any meaningful way. The two were designed with very different targets and functions in mind.
Switch exists to streamline Nintendo’s handheld and console platforms into one, and being an appealing family console (with more M-rated games for older audiences as well). Most more serious Switch owners (myself included), use it for the Nintendo exclusives and 3rd Party/indie games, and generally have another platform for other games, be it exclusives or games that don’t run as well on the Switch.
The Deck seems like an alternative to gaming laptops and bringing PC gaming to the console audience. Markets like Xbox and PlayStation are what the Deck will be cutting into, so it makes more sense to be comparing them to the Deck because those are what the Deck will actually be competing with.
I mostly agree but also imo there is a market of console gamers who would like to check out PC gaming but don't due to the expense and few plug-and-play options. and most zoomer youtube ecelebs have expensive PCs so it's not some dusty boomer hobby. imo valve could gain some ground somewhere maybe.

Vita is fantastic when it comes to homebrew, never seen such a active community for a dead console in a while. The only issues I have with the system is the lack of proper SD card support and the shitty memory cards they used instead,
new stuff or just ports?
the deck could follow that, the main problem is it doesn't make money for companies unless they can lock you into their platform and services, unless it's someone like valve using some of their spare change because they can.

There seems to be some interest among the japanese for the Steam Deck, with a debate whether it is competing against the Switch or PS5.
Overall though many people from these threads are believing that now Playstation is completely over, in addition to how badly the PS5 is doing in Japan according to the sale charts. My favorite thread title that seems to sum up the whole thing very well is this one:

"Switch for normal people, Steam Deck for enthusiasts, PS5 for schizos.
I could properly classify them"
They can't play PC hentai games in bed with the PS5 and a laptop is too bulky.
I remember the 3DO and that's not even remotely a valid comparison to what the Steam Deck is going to be.

Even for the sake of argument let's say Valve licensed the exact technical specifications to other manufactures so the clones work 1-to-1 as the official hardware,
Valve can't give out the blueprints and schematics to anything other than the board layout. Steam Deck is actually worse than the 3DO when it comes to a pure hardware business model, they have nothing to license because they own nothing.
How will Xbox, Sony, Apple and Nintendo react? They won't.

It’s a combination of both. Regarding the Deck, I believe Valve knows that people are more likely to play older games on the go and saw the potential of the PC gaming handheld market.

I have a feeling this is yet another of Valve's ventures into hardware only made possible by steam's passive income for them and will be abandoned within a year just like Steam Controllers, Steam Link, and now the Valve Index with its accessories.

It is literally listed as one of the major perks of working at valve on their careers page to be able to do that because of steam.

Steam Machines actually were released?

I thought they just never materialized lol
I'm almost certain only a few of the shown brands in that image actually decided to manufacture, or maybe some of the others did but only in very limited quantities. Alienware is one of the only companies I can be certain sold these things. Had a page on their site to customize the build and everything.

Yeah, and GameStop had them in store, though I never saw one in person. I wanted to buy one on clearance because they looked like decent HTPCs but the moment they started selling them cheap, they were gone in a heartbeat

I did manage to get one Steam Link for like $5 when those went cheap at least. Those actually have astoundingly good build quality. They make even the PS Vita TV feel like a happy meal toy.

I've seen two kids with Switch Lites at a Walmart once.

That was it.
I saw it once at a place I used to work. Guy was from another office, real introvert, he used it to play Hollow Knight while waiting for his uber so he was not forced to look at anyone.

Never saw it again cuz walking around with that shit around here is the same as begging to be mugged.
