Given what we've learned here at the forums sometimes those two things go hand in hand.
Main character or not (debatable, Team Rocket lasted far longer and appeared more regularly than any other recurring character sans Ash or Pikachu), Blaustein was beloved by so many that she held the position of voice actress for Meowth for something like eight years until all the voice actors were overhauled (iirc), not just her. I'll be surprised if Gen Zed lasts more than a year in any capacity, and after it's over people will still be talking about their fond memories of Pokémon as it was in their youth. Meowth's speech in the first Pokémon movie will still be touching and meaningful. His backstory will still be sad and immensely bittersweet - and above all memorable. No one will think of any part of Gen Zed like that.
From the way Hayden said it in the RadioTitans interview, "Pew pew!" is just onomatopoeia of a gun noise, most likely with finger actions, meaning "shots fired". He seems to think all his jokes are so cutting edge that they warrant this follow up response, and since Gen Zed is supposedly "edgy", he transferred it over to his character's Twitter account.
That just makes it even more obnoxious.
