Sex offender status is no joke. Especially in Virginia. Even if he gets a suspended or light sentence, it'll be around his neck like a noose the rest of his life.
He'll be forever banned from certain areas and will have a horrific time finding housing that'll rent to him. (He has no major assets outside the tugboat bucks and don't be surprised if those get looked at and cut off.) Home ownership is out of the question. He'll either be on the street, couch surfing, or in some ramshackle section 8 housing/shelter. He only gets 1600 a month, that's barely enough to cover a month of rent without utilities in most of Central Virginia. (No way in hell he gets long term roommates.) In another year or so he wouldn't be able to afford the area. Job wise he's also fucked. No degree and unemployed for a decade+. Even Burger flipping jobs will turn away sex offenders. The best he's looking at is low end janitorial work.
Last I checked, they don't universally ban internet access anymore because of how dependant modern society is on it, but they do heavily monitor and restrict what you can do through blocker programs. So goodbye to all his patreon, youtube, and godundme grifts. He'll have to report to a probation officer every few weeks and won't be able to easily leave the state, aka no conventions.
