Lucas basically has no hobbies (entertainment) because his basic needs (both real needs like shelter or food) and fantasy needs (new mother figure, et c) are not met. Maslow might not be a perfect analogy for the observed behavior where Lucas traded something that might brighten his day for a baser satisfaction, but even when he was semi-stable and hoarding board games both his interest and self-proclaimed expertise were purely performative. he barely understood the concepts of game theory or entertainment design. he instead saw board games as a means to an end - an end to possibly meet women. he didn't care if they made sense, had intriguing concepts, were fun or funny - that wasn't the point for Lucas. the point for Lucas was using them as a vehicle to attract (passively, since he's an incredibly narcissistic coward) a woman's attention in a romantic way.
that this is in inherently kind of a broken train of thought is irrelevant. Lucas sees everything as a vehicle towards this end and if it isn't, either he isn't interested, or will twist it into that vehicle.
because Lucas lacks any hobbies and is constantly in a state between panic and disordered needy thinking, he has "no room" to entertain himself or others. his ego refuses to allow any separation between himself and his impulses far enough to seek simple amusement. about the closest he might get to that is anything that would satisfy his baser impulses like food or pornography.
this is the same guy that is trying to attract women with "nigga".
I think what you said about Maslow's hierarchy is true for everyone.... but somehow not for lucas. (Edit: I reread what you wrote, and I think we essentially agree, apparently I skimmed what you'd written too quickly. My bad)
This is difficult for me to articulate, but I just don't see Lucas as even having the capacity for any small, quiet, polite pursuits.
He's just one of those people that doesn't have interests, he doesn't "do" hobbies. His focus is entirely insular, even if you put him in a room with tv, other than stirring his anger, he won't watch it casually. He never discussed his favorite movies, from the present or the past, or mentions having any books, art, nothing.
Even when Lucas has his needs met, which for Lucas are little more than food, because he doesn't seem to care about the hygienic state of where he sleeps... he won't pursue more sophisticated needs on the hierarchy. Food, ample food, varied food, and a large amount of that food. That's it for him.
Even music, which Lucas mentions from time to time, is little more than a connection to high school, and a way to demonstrate himself as being singular and unique, and connected with leftist concepts and figures, a la Henry Rollins and Jello Biafra... It's one of the reasons why as you correctly noticed, board games as an interest was such an obviously fake facade for him. He had no desire to even play them with other people, he was purely hoarding them, because he had decided that board games were connected with intelligence and pacifism, which are both connected to liberalism in his mind, which were buttresses to his "pussy pursuit".
It's comical, and it sounds reductionist, to be able to say, as
@WonderWino did above, that he eats it, fucks it, or pisses on it, but with lucas? This comical simplification is actually true. He doesn't have anything else in him. It's one of the reasons why his pose as an intellectual is such obviously desperate bullshit.
