Ironically, it's his very desperate efforts to maintain his illusionary youth (while he is now obviously a middle aged man) that make him boring. When you're younger you can just sort of power through substance induced brain fog. When you're older, it makes you boring, repetitive, unimaginative, uncreative, everything you don't want to be as an entertainer.
