I've observed the same, it might be because of social media. Back in the day you'd call someone a faggot over AIM or SMS or something, and you'd have to still see them and socialize with them the next day in school. Nowadays these cliques all seem to be much more online, so the difference between talking shit to actual physical people around you and talking shit to whoever on IRC has disappeared to an extent. They can't differentiate between these two environments, and that's also why so many of them adopt these edgy "based" 4chan groyper or whatever personas offline.
