In my experience, I have seen it as "Hey, you like my mainstream content and my voice doesn't make you want to kill yourself? Maybe you will be interested in me shooting/beating up/out-strategizing/le epic shrekking people in X videogame, here is a preview behind my voice because this video would have had a blank background anyway. Let's be honest, my fellow Zoomers, you were probably tuning me out and watching my boomstick go bang bang anyway." It happens a lot in other niche channels which report on drama within those niches - they make a video that is labelled something like "CAN YOU BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED? PLAYER X AND TEAM Y DRAMA!!!" then they basically summarize the content of the drama over the course of a 10 minute 1 second video with their own gameplay as the background, within the game that Player X and Team Y specialize in and are way better at than the video creator. It's a way to make people feel comfortable, I guess, and to attract them to future videos. On some level, whoever first thought of it is quite brilliant, because it seems effective in working as a hypnotizing force on zoomers.
