It is fairly impressive that, for being the Garfield of lolcows, we can still keep this thread going and on-topic for a year since his last “public” appearance.

It was googling dobson after finding his badwebcomics wiki page that brought me to the farms in the first place. Given I'm a webcomic creator I guess he struck a chord with me, but he really overlaps with every part of the online art community. Dobson alone has ignored enough professional advice you could probably write at least a couple books with. In the end he is a great example of what not to be on the internet. As long as there are kiddies buying a graphics tablet and putting out stuff online, there will be someone along the line to tell them "Don't be a Dobson."

Everyone shits on Jim Davis, but he admits he hasn't drawn a Garfield strip since the 90s and hasn't been actively involved in writing them this millenia. And he made more this year than the average person shitting on Garfield will make in their lifetime.

I got your meaning. (And I didn't take your post as shitting on Garfield - and even if I did, I'm not going to defend fucking Garfield.)

Just pointing out that Garfield is blandly mediocre but Jim Davis makes bank on it. He does nothing other than cash checks at this point. There is profit in being mediocre and accepting that you're mediocre. I would think the contrast with Dobson is readily apparent.

As a comic, I think of Dobson as being more like "Cathy," because I really hated that ugly-assed, unfunny comic and it always disgusted me when my eye glanced across that part of the comics page. Like Dobson, the main protagonist is a fat, slovenly spectrum-dweller who is so annoying she's the comics equivalent to fingernails on a chalkboard. Badly drawn, too, so that fits perfectly. ACK!

I feel like that's selling Dobbo a little short. I wouldn't say he's vanilla by any means. The guy has spent over a decade inserting himself into everything he sees and turning everything imaginable into a massive conflict that ultimately further ruins his career and reputation. When a comic of yours that the userbase agrees with gets posted on r/Gamerghazi but they instead spend the entire thread talking about how fake of an ally you, you know there is something interesting about that person.

I agree. Dobson is insufferable and annoying, but even his fetish is pretty low stakes/doesn’t involve real people. Dobson is an extreme example of a type of person most of us probably know. That versus the LolCow who is just a straight up horror show and we pray we never actually meet in person.

I do miss the early 2010's when he'd release a comic every other week which would be torn apart in a LOL thread on /v/. Somehow his comics always had a way of hitting the right chords of "he can't really believe this" And for those asking if he qualifies as a lolcow, he absolutely was ten years ago, but its painfully clear he has had a smaller footprint over the past 5 years. I would say his peak was 2014.

The weird thing about Dobson was always that he was a complete nobody without any power or say in any matter whatsoever, but he managed to get under your skin nonetheless with how utterly batshit insane, utterly self-serving and unreasonably hatefilled his comics were. And he'd always play the victim. He'd severely insult vast group of people for having views he dislikes and when they told him to knock it off, he whined about abuse.

There's many worse people covered on the farms, there's people who have done worse things and who have a bigger impact on the world, yet Dobson managed to be such an ass to still stand out somehow.

Dobson had all the unwarranted self importance and inability to perceive his own flaws of your average lolcow, but unlike someone like Chris he wasn’t autistic, mentally ill or had a broken ass family background.

He was just a piece of shit who loved to huff his own farts, so even people who’d feel bad about mocking someone like Chris could join in the fun with a clean conscience.

That kind of gave him a unique niche in lolcowdom.

And yes, he’s been gone for a year. But art and the internet has always given him the attention he craved, so he’ll be back.

Like Jews awaiting the Moschiach or Shia Muslims awaiting the return of the hidden imam, we will sit here and wait patiently, until Dobson returns.
