@Boston Brand I know this is off topic, but whatever happened to David Brin? He's publishing a book in September with Ring of Fire Press, is he not selling anymore, has TDS got him, or is he just doing a favor for Eric Flint?

Oh has TDS gotten him something fierce.

First, Brin is your textbook author who has been coasting on past glories for decades... his career peaked in the 90s with the admittedly superb Uplift Saga, and I can count the number of books he's put out since Kiln People in 2002 on one hand.

That book you mentioned that Eric Flint's Ring of Fire Press is putting out? Its only his fourth novel in 20 years. Literally the only thing with his name in bookstores this past decade was a Baen anthology that reprinted one of his short stories all written by people named David.

Okay, so he peaked in the Clinton Administration... what's the big deal then? Well, he went bugnuts with social media. Especially post Trump winning... he was already on the outs with the current incrowd in spec fiction (he's old white dude) but he pissed off a ton of longtime friends and authors on the OTHER side of the spectrum by constantly hurling insults and starting arguments.

Funilly it ended when, after harassing Brad Torgersen, screaming Bet me, bet me, Larry Correia unloaded both barrels on the poor bastard, called him out, bet 5k on proving him wrong... all Brin had to do was sign a contract to that effect. Brin cracked like an egg under a cinderblock.

All that can be found with a quick Facebook search btw. All public posts. All hilarious. Correia is definitely a combative dick, but when he aims at a deserving target? Beautiful.

In the Puppy Sphere, Brin's name results in jokes and shouts of "Bet Me". Its still a warmer reception than the shrugs he gets from the other side... or the inherent hostility from the wokies.

As his books increasingly are out of print, his fall from grace will only continue... he's a has been, a punch line or another obsolete old white man, depending which person in the industry you speak to. Doesn't help he's an asshole too.

I'm actually sad about that, his Uplift books are dear favorites of mine. But Brin is a textbook example that coasting on past glories and picking fights on the Internet make for a poor combo.

Lol so this might be more of a favor to Brin than a favor from Brin rip my sides.
Edit: The reason why I mention him is that Im reading some of David Friedmans old blogs and in one post he flat out accuses Brin of being intellectually dishonest over lets say creatively quoting Adam Smith.

I will have to check, but if I'm not mistaken, isn't it only being published digitally? A ton of RoF and Baen stuff is digital only... and frankly, what's there to lose for cranking out a new a Brin novel if that's the case? It caught your attention didn't it? A few others might pay just for the name.

Probably helps that Eric Flint has the patience of a saint, so he may be one of rhe last folks in the buisiness who can still stomach Brin, much less work with him.

I think ROF Press is a digital/print on demand pasture for Baen Books and Eric Flint to develop new and up coming authors so maybe

Last thing about ROF Press never have i seen a publisher's cover art vary so wildly from first collage on photoshop:
sit-stay-kill-cover-web.jpg
to really quite handsome covers:
Missions-Cover-Front-highres-300x449.jpg
to almost everything in between:
demons-revelations-web-2.jpg
looking at the store page is a massive mess, even Baen covers at their most Baeniest were never quite this uneven.

as for ROF, you can definitely tell that most of the cover attention goes to the main 1632 books, which are routinely among the best on the shelves.
Oh, boy. I'll say. Old Nathan looks like a cover Baen rejected.

This probably isn't the right thread for this. If it's more fitting for another, I will glady repost. However, what a take...

You can see this went over like your a wet fart.
For certain genres (like Romance) and subgenres (think LitRPG) self published authors pretty much ARE the market at this point. And it looks like this guy's most recent book was published by some kind of vanity press out of the Philippines? (Ukiyoto? What's that?) Also, I'm kind of wondering if his ebook is not in fact self-published. It is selling for only $2.99, typically a self-published price point.

A lot of self-published authors truly suck, but this guy does appear to be nuts

I wonder how much of his Amazon biography is true? "Tenth-largest adult website?" 🙄

This link does seem to confirm short fiction printed in Playboy, though, but I see no evidence he ever wrote anything for the Boston Herald or Globe, though he was quoted in the Herald over a raid on a BDSM club that kicked him out for "unsafe play."

edit: The other thing I can find no evidence of is a specific "Boston Book Review" site or publication. There's a fairly prestigious and very left-wing Boston Review site, that does review (and publish) books, but I see no evidence they call themselves, well, "Boston Book Review," nor that they have (or have ever had) a "crime editor." Hard to say. 🤷‍♂️

Oh god this is like a deranged version of the Atlanta Nights saga. Truly history repeats itself first as a tragedy then as a farce.

Honestly, what's the difference between YA and New Adult? They seem damn near identical to me, both in terms of subject matter and audience.
It’s Young Adult, except the characters are slightly older, so they can do some things that YA characters can’t, like vote and live on their own and maybe drink.

It should be exploring the world of “adulting” however it’s more appropriate here than for those who use the phrase unironically, considering that the age range is about 18-23. But I’ve yet to see that (granted new adult isn’t something I read a lot of) instead of risqué YA.

I've been watching Space Kadet for a while. Glad to see he got a mention on KF. Some dedicated autists have documented him rather thoroughly.

A blog dedicated to his Twitter trolling.

Another blog with several articles, including this well-researched timeline. He's made comments about watersports and pedophilia.

If you have doubts whether his "literary opus" on bodybuilding schmoes is anything other than bad self-insert erotica, here are some extremely creepy pics of his bodybuilding phase (bordering on NSFW).
