There is no viable counter force in the country. The Taliban have taken over 100 percent of the country with the single exception of the airport the foreigners are trapped at. And guns that are in the hands of non-Taliban are being seized.

Just a lay opinion, but I believe Afghanistan will be the single most stable country in the entire region and almost completely invulnerable to outside meddling.

Actually there is one single province still not taken yet by the Taliban, Panjshir province just north from Kabul. This is where the Afghan vice president Amrullah Saleh and ex northern alliance create the resistance after the Taliban takeover

yeah thats the point. if you're doing an occupation, but aren't willing to get your hands dirty because muh human rights muh morals, then the occupied stop fearing and respecting you, and start acting up. then it iurns into a war of attrition, except the attrition is all on your side because you refuse to retaliate and hit the enemy where it hurts, so you will naturally lose over time.

alternatively you could just establish secret police and start rooting out insurgents, their collaborators and their sympathisers. disappear them argentina style, helicopter them pinochet style, whatever. very effective way to pacify the territory you control. in the case of afghanistan you could do this to all the major cities easily. add to that a tight lockdown on the eastern border to deprive the taliban of their support from pakistan, and now you're actually in a position where time is on your side, because with no economic support inside the country and no ability to access foreign aid either, the insurgency can not keep up operations, can not keep recruiting, can't even hold on to its own troops, and will fade out of existence over time. sure they would still have support among the rural pashtuns, but let's be real, the rural pashtuns can't provide them with guns, ammo, trucks, fuel, electronics, etc, because they're impoverished peasants, and once secret police get established in the more remote locations too even that suport will fade.
