I found 1st Cav to be the same way.

Lots of guys who looked good on paper that couldn't do basic fucking tasks, didn't know shit about their MOS, toxic leadership, and flat out abusive of subordinates.

How it kind of got its nickname of "Worst Cav"

I think one of the worst things about this is the firm realization that one of the world's greatest powers is ran by actual retards. There's no grand evil scheme or any long term agenda to their decision making. I'd prefer being governed by actual shit slinging apes over these incompetent oxygen thieves. It's embarrassing to watch the complete disinterest in comprehending the larger consequences of their actions.

I started out in an utter shit unit. I moved to 1/1 and the First Sergeant of my company made my head explode. Not only was this a man who knew the job of the people under him, but he was past the "Dick and Jane" reading level. It was weird actually looking up to a senior enlisted man.

And he understood people-- I'm the sort to say "I don't understand why I'm doing this." He, almost uniquely, grasped a really key thing about leadership-- if it's not an emergency, tell that guy WHY he's doing it and convincr him that it makes sense. Do that a couple times, and not only does he start trusting you to actually have reasons, but the other guys who were thinking the same thing but knew jow to shut up and follow orders will work better, too. It changed the tune of the whole company.

It wasn't enough to keep me in, but if I could have been guaranteed I'd keep working for THAT guy, I would have seriously considered it.

But no, way too many littledick fucks who were too stupid to lead and too chickenshit to drop rank. If you want to be a belligerent douchebag, at least have the balls to back it up with your hands instead of your chevrons.


Anyway, I love being free.

The nature vs. nurture issue is definitely an old one that has no clean answer, both scientifically and philosophically. Personally, my policy is save judgement until they fuck up, but every kid deserves a fighting chance, which they aren't gonna get in bumfuck Afghanistan.

I think of people like dogs. While there are definite behavior predispositions in different breeds, any of them can be raised right or wrong. Pitbull, lab, dachshund, whatever - BUT a poorly raised pitbull is a helluva lot worse than a poorly raised dachshund.
