I think they are obsessed with the "useless lesbian" meme, which is the idea that a lesbian might not realize she's being flirted with and how she assumes every girl is straight or something like that. (Obviously this doesn't stop real lesbians from finding dates if they want to.) Maybe it's not that prevalent anymore, but transbians loved to be like "O M G I am such a useless lesbian uwu".
I think it's because it's a crossover with the nerd who doesn't know he's been flirted with meme. It is very sad. From the articles I get the impression this kid was pretty low functioning. I can believe that he wanted to be a cute cat-boy/girl because he saw that in his video games or anime, that's not strange for a lonely autistic kid.
