I have to disagree, they might be a little odd in their sense of humor or emotional expression, and they absolutely weren’t equipped to properly raise a special needs baby, but Steph’s heavily audited posts about them still paints them as an otherwise typical old married couple, instead of the insufferably abusive custodians she’s convinced they are. They’re just grumpy boomers that get agitated and snap at each other and their failure to launch adult daughter on occasion.

I'm wondering if maybe they didn't have a full idea of just how "special" Staph was going to end up being.
I knew a couple growing up who couldn't have their own kids, so they adopted two kids from an Eastern European orphanage and one kid from Guatemala.
One of the EU kids had a myriad of issues that apparently they were not informed about. Whether the orphanage did not know, or whether they concealed it, wasn't really known.
Now granted, Russia or Ukraine is probably a little less scrupulous than American adoption agencies... but I don't put it past social services or whoever to be less than completely forthcoming about existing conditions or possibility of later developing certain conditions.

Somewhere along the line the school or regular doctor checkups could have given an indication that something was off. Didn't she say somewhere further back that she was late in certain aspects as a child?
Someone must have mentioned F.A.S at some point, she recounts all of these other issues that goes along with it.
Either way she's being evaluated by a psychologist now isn't she?

Is it possible that she is just going through something similar to "the vampire phase" that a lot of tweens went through post twilight when romance novels about witches, demons and vampires were popular?
She looked so innocent and normal in her old pictures that I almost suspect she didn't have her teenage rebellion phase back then and that it's coming out now in her thirties.

Definitely this, and also probably some good old ignorance on everybody's part. Sure this drug baby might have developmental issues as she gets older, but raise her right, send her to college, and marry her off, and she'll be fine. I don't think doctors, adoption agency, or the Friglies had any idea just how fucked up Staph's brain was. Combine that with indulgent parenting, and you get one XL gyro as a result.
