Russia is "the Lesser Satan". Taliban would gladly behead them, as mujahaddis did back in the day but right now, Russia is a situational friend. However, Russia is a bit nervy, because it's guarding the Tadjik border. Should the Taliban start being up to some tricks, Russia is getting a mighty headache in their backyard. With their de-facto defeat in Armenia v. Azerbaijan fight, they can't really afford it.
