Gender roles vary but are always in same direction because they derived from actual gender differences. You will never find society where women go to war while men stay home with babies but you can find families where this is true and those families can be very high standing. Gender roles are about how group trends work in one environment, by their nature the roles don't take into consideration individual people or circumstances. Even societies that are very strict about gender roles have had accepted ways to deviate from them when needed, both temporarily and permanently. People have always found ways to accommodate and accept gender nonconforming people if they are otherwise tolerable and have enough positive sides to them. No going tranny needed.

To add on, in the 18th century, men wore giant wigs, makeup, lace, heels, etc. The American and French revolutions were really the starting point for men's fashion becoming boring. A lot of those elaborate styles were associated with aristocracy/monarchy, while simpler outfits were more symbolic of democracy and equality.

The same happened with women's fashion for a few decades (think marie antoinette vs jane austen) but then the style went back to being ornate by the mid 19th century. Men kept wearing relatively austere suits (with a few exceptions like smoking jackets) and the gendered distinction of plain vs more colorful/decorative clothing has lasted to this day.

This woman literally thinks 'intersex' means 'born with two functioning sets of genitals, one from either sex.' Christ, no wonder these people are so confused.

For the record, 'intersex' (not a medical term btw) usually just means being born with ambiguous genitalia, or another disorder affecting the way your genitals develop or with your chromosomes. You can't be born with functioning male and female external genitalia. The human body does not work that way: a fetus develops (or in rare cases fails to develop, or does not fully develop) one way or another:

The only condition that comes close is 'true hermaphroditism' which involves possessing both ovarian and testicular tissue, and even that is extremely rare (only around 600 cases ever observed, and most of those limited to one particular location where it seems to be a genetic thing).

How is it possible to be so obsessed with a subject and yet not know the slightest thing about it? I don't understand how you can base your beliefs and decisions (up to and including life-changing surgery) on a theory of sexual differentiation that does not exist and is physically impossible.

Carlos has also stated publicly that the reaction when she came out, waaaay back in the dark and dingy early 70s, was underwhelming, and that the anxiety she felt about it at the time was in her own head. The lines can get blurry or controversial in some areas: the historical trend has unfortunately been to assume that gender differences must be based on physical sex differences (eg, women can't go into higher education, because it will upset their wombs and they will sicken and die), and then there has been backlash to that which goes too far in the opposite direction (eg, insisting that difference in upper body strength between men and women is due to sexism). But that's the basic idea.

To make things more confusing, TRAs first hijacked the idea of 'gender is a social construct' (true!) and then when that didn't satisfy the autogynephiles enough, they started insisting that sex differences are a social construct as well (not true!). Hence all the ridiculous sperging about 'muh intersex' and 'doctors just randomly assign sex at birth, no one really knows!'

Yeah, I remember Krist talking about for many years afterwards, every time he’d come across a lefthand guitar/guitar tuned for lefties in pawn/guitar stores he’d go “Aw fuck, I gottta get this for Kurt, he’ll love it!”

Only to then realize that there was no Kurt.

Kurt was a complicated man. (With a complicated, suspicious, weird ass death!)

Had a fuckton of problems, a pretty messed up childhood (father issues), chronic stomach pain that (at least partly) led to using heroin.

Yet everyone who met him, recalled that he was shy, kind and funny. (I remember he had a relationship with a girl in Paris, who didn’t know who he was, before Nirvana became fucking huge.

Deep down inside, he probably would have liked nothing better than making melodic cockrock like his favorite band from the 70ies.

But he was also punk, or at least TRIED to be punk, so he did shit like wearing a dress or talking about how strong of a supporter of gay rights he is, to piss people off.

Had Cobain been born 15 years earlier, he’d wear a denim vest with a swastika on it, to be a good, shocking punker.
