Remember when reddit was considered a place where all the weirdos went? Ok, it's still that, but embraced as mainstream now. Now it's become so normalised and mainstream that "ew 4chan and Kiwifarms are the worst, instant ban for linking either of those" is the prevailing idea there. Having any site become open to normal people/the mainstream is a guarantee for it becoming a shithole.

reddit is trying to be normal, but they're the exact opposite of normal. they're trying to use the same arguments that a lot of society uses whenever people dissent, which is usually "we have to maintain order and normalcy. everything shouldn't stop because one person is making a fuss.". the thing that makes reddit not normal is who they even focus on to begin with. they love to focus on the LGBT community, trying to accept people who are "different" and "queer" and what not, it's literally BUILT for you to be different and still be accepted into the community.

reddit to the internet is the equivalent of what amsterdam is to the netherlands, or what a capital city is to a european country. most capital cities have that typical "we're LGBT friendly" BS along with a bunch of ads and signs about how trans people should be accepted, but the action demographics for the city show that maybe 50% of people in that city aren't even from the country, and those that are end up being either extremely poor or rich and have interacted with rich people from other countries more than people in their own country. these capital cities also end up being the exact opposite of the country that they're representing, or represent other cities in other countries more than their own. take amsterdam for instance, it's literally "dude weed lmao" the city, but if you go to any other town or city in the netherlands, it has these beautiful hillsides and these really old buildings and windmills and stuff like that, and the locals are friendly it's so cool. but if you go back to amsterdam, you'll probably have people who were in black lives matter protests in that city over george hooper, meanwhile people in other towns couldn't give less of a fuck about what happened in america

I don't think a lot of people understand what a huge contribution r/shitredditsays made to the current state of things.
At the time when Reddit was more libertarian, the redditor stereotype was this guy:

SomethingAwful had kind of a rivalry/hateboner for Reddit at the time, and r/shitredditsays had a long history of being controlled by goons. It started out as a way to make fun of stereotypical fedora-tipping redditors, but also attracted a bunch of Sarkeesian-tier feminists who wanted to harp on the "misogyny" of them. If I remember correctly, it was also one of the first big problems with power moderators, as many SRS mods weaseled their way into positions of power in other subreddits, where they proceeded to enforce social justice rules.

IMO, the turning point for Reddit was when they re-calibrated the default subreddits to remove r/atheism and added r/TwoXChromosomes. That was kind of point at which SRS had won.

Which begs the question - what would have happened with reddit if the SA swine hadn't interfered with it? guess we'll never know, at this point.

But it's quite obvious that SA goons being butthurt (as usual) is the source of every internet malady that spawned in the early '00s, and now we are living with the consequences of that.

To begin with, the site is no longer a niche site for programming nerds, but instead a mainstream social media site. I'd also put a fair bit of blame on the site's changing direction on /r/shitredditsays, who started the phenomenon of going to the media to get smear pieces written about any subreddit they found particularly cringe (and since SRS was entirely bitter cat ladies and proto-troons, that included a lot of rote political opposition instead of objectively questionable shit like /r/jailbait), to the point that Conde Nast had to come in and tell the admins to clean up the site's reputation, which led to the whole saga of Ellen Pao's time as CEO.

This, personally, is a bit different than I remember from 2010-2012 reddit. If anything, one of the BIGGEST coverage reddit received around that time specifically was about r/jailbait and violentacrez, when Anderson Cooper & CNN did a piece on it, and I specifically remember reading about that & the fallout on SRS. That's not to say that the direction the website has taken isn't in part due to SRS, or whatever.

If anything, I'd argue that the website originally being a niche programming website is why they have so many trannies on there now - Shockingly, jannies who spend all day moderating forums and arguing about video games don't end up the most mentally well individuals.

Reddit admins have tended to split the baby as of late. /r/ChapoTrapHouse (angry commieposting board) got yeeted just before t_d did.

What's gonna happen is that they'll nuke NNN (because of course they will), and probably demod some of these hostage-taking jannies under a novel reading of the ToS regarding 'weaponizing subreddits' and 'breaking reddit'. Everyone will hate that, there will be a haughtily-worded /r/annoucements post with locked comments downvoted to zero, and that will be the end of it.

You might see a feature change that blocks subs with >100K people from going private since this isn't the first janny tantrum, and they're probably sick of it.
