This was completely normal behavior for families in the 80's and earlier. Parents would tell their kids "GO PLAY" and kick them out of the house so mom could do housework or have some quiet time. If they kept coming back inside every 5 minutes, mom would yell at them to stop making up excuses. I can 100% see a normal, non-crazy mom locking the door because the kids kept bothering her, and putting water out as a response to "but I want (another) drink of water!"
The Satanic Panic and the kidnapping scare put an end to unsupervised outdoors play. But unless one of those kids was injured, crying, or deathly scared of something, what she described was not abuse.
(I once whined so much about being forced outside to play, my mother took a timer, set it to 30 minutes, and told me I was not allowed back inside until it was done. I spent 15 minutes poking around the yard, and 15 minutes staring at the timer until I could get back inside to my toys. I never felt abused, but it did take some growing up before I realized I was being a whiny shut-in brat.)

I like this interpretation. Died to ensure that he could force any subsequent pregnancy of Becky's to miscarry. Now his ghost haunts her womb, mysteriously causing her pregnancy tests to read negative even when she's 5 days late and nauseous and therefore must totally be pregnant, and then causing her period...uh, miscarriage...to start a few days later.
