The drawbacks of the high density/population is pretty obvious - they draw huge amounts of resources every day. Tons of food and other goods have to come into the city every day, or everyone starves, and of course they need water and power. All the landlocked big cities are toast, they would be surrounded and starved out inside a week. The coastal cities with ports might be able to limp along for a while.
Some say the flipside is that the large populations give you a lot of man power, but you have to consider who lives in these urban hives. How many of them would be willing and able to actually fight for the blue bugmen? How much war material do they have? Are you going to be able to turn them into any kind of fighting force worth using before the entire city burns to the ground?
The major cities aren't like the old city-states of Greece, they're not able to secure themselves even in peacetime.
