That's the thing. Japan wasn't forced to do anything. The Americans only made them open their ports for trade. They wholeheartedly embraced Westernization for its own merits; they didn't have it forced upon them like Africa, America, and India, nor were they ever actually colonized. They looked at it, realized it was objectively superior to what they had been doing, and adopted it for their own ends, essentially deciding that the best way to beat the western powers to to join them and beat them at their own game, and become a colonial power.

You have to remember that Japan was, throughout the Edo Period, basically a real life version of the Medieval Stasis trope. For at least 250 years, Japan was at complete peace; there were no civil wars or internal unrest to speak of. The entire nation was stable and society was so peaceful, the samurai went from being warriors to being bureaucrats, and basically never used their swords for anything, to point they stopped carrying them. This is unheard of in world history and maybe the longest period of unbroken peace in the history of any nation. There were no external wars either; in fact, the nation was completely closed off from outside contact by order of the Shogun, with the exception of Dutch traders operating out of a single port, and some Chinese and Korean traders operating out of other ports. That stability came at a cost; Japan was completely isolated, and also completely stagnant, and was basically unchanged from the beginning of the era all the way to the end, and had no idea what was actually going on out in the world. Technology, social mores, governance, etc. either changed very little or not at all. Then, suddenly, this American shows up with a fleet of black ships that could literally wreck anything the Japanese had approaching a navy with little trouble, points his cannons at you and basically says, "Open up or get fucked, bitch", and suddenly your pleasant little isolation is completely tossed aside and you realize that these western countries are playing one the most high stakes games of geopolitics in history and you are caught in the middle. You'd shit your pants too.

keep in mind that this was motivated by existential dread, it was a desperation move they deemed necessary to preserve their independence. basically they saw how china was being eviscerated by the western powers, and they knew japan would suffer the same fate because they were in no position to compete with those powers economically or militarily.

they saw that they had to make extreme advances in economic and military power, and that it had to be done very fast, in order to be able to stand up to the eventual attack. that's why they turbo westernized themselves as hard as possible.
