Just to expand upon this, psychonauts 2 had no real chance to chart. It had minimal attention on release (I'd bet most people didn't know it can out until afterwards, I know I didn't) and had a lot of incredibly stiff competition. Less than a week after ghost of Tsushima de and 2 days before nmh3. It also released at the end of the month, giving it little time to gain any traction.
You'd think someone who plays games for a living would be able realise this, but Phil makes it so obvious he isn't interested in the wider industry. Just like his takes on release dates
Yeah I don't keep track of new games that much these days as I'm playing through a backlog of older titles, but just to put things into perspective for someone not in the know, this particular month and the next there seems to be a lot of big name titles that are all clumped together this year, it would literally be a battle of multiple advertisement campaigns to see which major games get the most media attention for lets say, a 2-3 week period and then most day one buyers would move onto the next hottest new major releases.
Deathloop seems to be getting a lot more spotlight recently, and obviously if there have been other titles that haven't been able to generate much hype both from advertising and the game reviewers as well, then of course a game could easily get drowned out by what's trending at that current point in time.
Phil cares too much about this sort of shit, and even then he's mostly wrong. Yeah a game not hitting high in the sales charts is not really ideal at all for a lot of invested parties, but that hasn't meant the game has completely flopped and the people who have really wanted to play it, have been doing so and got their money's worth. Plus it's not as if the title is suddenly going to be erased from existence, other people will eventually pick it up down the line when new games run dry, there is a good sale on or it's in someone's backlog just waiting to be played when you have some free time.
Phil only sees these games as a be all end all, either play the living fuck out of these games straight through after release, or never ever go back to touching that game in your entire life.
Edit: Although he didn't always use to have such distain for more older titles, his GTA playthroughs spring to mind about his former attitude about streaming older games, he's definitely warped his perception a lot though that if he's not seeing dollar signs with any sort of game, playing through them at all is a complete waste of time, and prevents him from having fun.
