They don't believe in revolution actually happening in their lifespan. That's why they put their blathant consumerism in the public view. And they like it that way, because under communism they'd have to work. When you think about when the revolution happens, what do the likes of Jim Sterling have to offer this future communist, workers utopia?
So, in historical materialism history is divided in segments, known as socio-economic formations. There's prehistoric formation, slavery, feudalism, capitalism(we're here), communism. Each formation determined mainly by the main means of production and mode of production, the way shit is being made, for simplicity. Prehistoric formation is the closest we got to the communism so far, because there was mostly personal property and almost everyone could just craft whatever they've needed, therefore nobody owned means of production. In slavery main mean of production were people and ruling class owned them. In feudalism main mean of production was land and ruling class owned land. In capitalism its all kinds of capital, yadda-yadda. The main point is, in order for formations to change, a new mode of production should be discovered. Any revolution, conducted without having new mode of production will fundamentally result only in change of leadership. Also, Marx mentioned that no way in hell working class should be divided into subgroups, which will basically wash existing revolutionary potential down the drain. Like all these gender shenanigans, numerous different minorities, hierarchy of opression, you know. Communism is popular because things gradually become worse. However, Jim and oppinion leaders like him would make sure nothing substantial will come out of it.
