Not surprised in the least. I'm genuinely in awe so few of his audience saw this coming.
Every time a male feminist puts that much effort into writing a caricature of an incel just to shit on them at every opportunity, it's always a goddamn self-insert they use to play out an elaborate humiliation fetish. Look at Andrew Dobson and Ko Hiratori. And everyone's surprised when they turn out to be the exact kind of person they're warning their audience about. Just like Dobson, Max hates himself for being white. He hates himself for being a man. And unsurprisingly, he hates himself for being an incel. No shit.
It's both self-abasement and aggressively projecting all their guilt and self-hatred into a character so they can pretend they don't have any of their traits. I have no idea who Ko Hiratori is so I looked him up and found zero results on him, not even a Wikipedia article. I did find his one manga that is all that shows up and Jesus the plot synopsis is the most male Feminist thing ever.

I remember talking to this guy on skype when I was a teen. I was around 13-15. He would try to act like a badass cool guy in front of 10-12 year olds on skype. He was an asshole too, he would send malware in the skype chat trying to trick dumb kids into downloading it.

The thing is that max made the flipside on purpose to scare away his fanbase since he absolutely hate the class of 09 community. He tortured Jecka because he hated seeing teens shipping her with his shitty female self insert Nicole and kill off the fan favorite uwu lesbian Ari in one of the endings but instead he's ruining his own reputation and possibly his career on the internet because people are digging up dirt on him and eventually one of his underage discord kittens is probably gonna post a Google doc next week. I reckon reading somewhere that he wanted an anime that “addressed real teen issues”, but through his series he has demonstrated that he doesn’t understand any of the topics that he talks about.
Grooming doesn’t work the way he think it does. Mental illness doesn’t work the way he thinks it does. Sex trafficking for example doesn’t work the way he thinks it does. The only thing he got right in the VN was the millennial fashion sense and the way teens used to talk back in the day.
Otherwise, everything is shock value for the sake of shock value without saying anything substantial. He really needed a co-writer who could’ve done quality control for him, and be able to call him out on when he’s coming off as an edgy retard.
It’s a shame that he treats his fandom badly, because most artists and writers would kill to have a fraction of what he has. If he didn’t like the Yuri faggots in his fandom, he could’ve just outright said that Nicole and Jecka are straight, it’s not up for interpretation.
While some lines from the first two games did get a laugh out of me, a lot of it loses its luster when you replay it.
Hearing about the shit he pulled in the early 2010s and onwards would’ve been forgivable if he wasn’t actively being a shitty person. Much like Yandere Dev, a lot of his past behavior wouldn’t matter if he wasn’t still acting like this in the present.

Unlike his other works and scaring away all 5 people who liked his stuff before, Class of 09 is popular, check any Twitter or TikTok post about the game and it has tons of likes and comments. He can't just start over this time around that easily. Maybe in the past sure but Macks failed to realize how newgen fans and how zealot they can be. Flipside and all the past stuff his new fans are finding out about him are going to stick around and haunt him and anything he does for a long time
He has touched on topics i don't really see talked about, abusive gay relationships (Ari x Nicole), loneliness, and how it is viewed on a spectrum (Nicole and Jeffery). If Class of 09 were written by someone who wasn't mentally stuck in 2009, it would make for a good story.
You're right to point out that Macks has no idea how grooming or mental illness works, and neither do his fans who think he covered X topic well in this game when it didn't.

Just discovered this series as the new game popped up in my feed. I liked the voice acting and thought it was amusing enough to leave on in the background while working. Was surprised the fanbase is apparently freaking out so much as it seemed like the crass edginess was the point of this series.
