A 63-year-old man has been arrested for fatally shooting his son with a homemade shotgun during a family gathering held in celebration of the suspect’s own birthday in Incheon.

According to the Incheon Yeonsu Police Station on Monday, the suspect was taken into custody on charges of murder and violating the law on firearms, swords and explosives.

Police said the weapon used was a crude, pipe-style homemade shotgun loaded with two rounds of buckshot containing steel pellets.

The weapon appears to be self-made and rudimentary,” a police official said. “We are still investigating whether he built it himself or acquired it from someone else. While domestic conflict appears to be the motive, the details are still under investigation.”

The incident occurred at around 9:31 p.m. on July 20 at a 33rd-floor apartment in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu District, Incheon.

The victim, who was in his 30s, had hosted the family gathering for his father’s birthday. The suspect fired two rounds at his son’s chest during the event, which was also attended by the victim’s wife, two children and other acquaintances. The son was transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest but was later pronounced dead.

The ammunition used consisted of plastic shells filled with steel pellets, which scatter upon firing and are commonly used for hunting.

After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene but was apprehended by police in Seoul around 12:20 a.m. on Monday. He was transferred back to Incheon by 4 a.m.

Explosive device found at home

During questioning, the suspect revealed he had planted an improvised explosive device at his residence in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong District, Seoul. A police SWAT team searched the apartment and safely removed a device that included a timer and flammable liquid.

Authorities plan to send both the homemade firearm and explosive to the National Forensic Service to investigate how they were made and whether others were involved.

Residents of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred expressed shock. Some reported hearing the gunshots directly. “I got a call from a friend asking if I was okay, and I realized the apartment in the news was mine,” said a resident in her 40s. “I was stunned.”

An owner of a nearby real estate office said, “I couldn’t believe it. A shooting in Korea? That’s unimaginable.”

The apartment complex has about 550 units and is located near schools and private academies. As of Sunday, staff at the building’s management office were blocking media access at the entrance.

I was really hoping there would be some information about what possible motive the guy could've had for murdering his own son, in front of his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. If he just wanted to kill his son, he would've found other opportunities to do it. This guy very specifically wanted the family gathered around to witness it.

Why does it seem like there's just something about the various subspecies of chinks, gooks and japs that lends itself to these kinds of psychotic cruelty? They love putting it in their media too. Every time I hear about some viral moment from Trending Slop Media Franchise # Whatever, it's showing some extreme closeup of a cartoon character drawn in fake fisheye perspective with their face all fucked up. Why are they like this?

Also, another article mentioned that the father also tried to kill his son's friend, but the gun misfired.

Some people think that these murder incidents are "revenge against society" attacks, where the country they live is totalitarian AF, and there's little to no chance of going after the Government directly, so they just kill the most vulnerable people (usually women and/or children) instead.

There has also been several times where parents even kill their own children and spouse, and then themselves, over financial issues:

Yeah this seems like a really interesting story but unfortunately I imagine a lot isn’t going to be revealed because Gook countries tend to be strict about privacy. That being said I found another news article that seems to delve more into the motive:

What triggered father's fatal shooting of his son in Incheon?

62-year-old man arrested for murder after shooting son with homemade gun

A 62-year-old man surnamed Cho has been arrested for killing his son with a homemade gun during a birthday gathering in Songdo, Incheon. The Incheon District Court issued a warrant on July 22, charging Cho with murder and attempted arson.

The incident happened on July 20, when Cho’s 34-year-old son had invited him over to celebrate Cho’s birthday. During the gathering, Cho used a self-made gun, crafted from a cut metal pipe, to shoot and kill his son. Police later found a homemade time bomb at Cho’s apartment in Dobong-gu, Seoul.

Cho told police he blamed his son for siding with his ex-wife in their past divorce and said they often argued. He had lived alone since divorcing his wife, Kim, more than 20 years ago.

Court records show that Cho had a criminal record for sexual assault before his divorce. In 1999, he was convicted of rape causing injury and sentenced to two years and six months in prison, suspended for four years. He did not appeal, making the verdict final. He and Kim reportedly divorced soon after the conviction.

His ex-wife Kim is now the CEO of a major beauty franchise. She started her business in 1992 with a small skincare clinic and established her company in 2004. Today, her brand operates over 100 stores nationwide with annual sales exceeding 90 billion won. Kim is considered a wealthy and successful entrepreneur.

People close to her say she rarely mentioned her former husband, and many did not even know she was divorced. A post Kim wrote on her company’s website in 2006 gives some insight into her past. She wrote that she had married at 25 without attending college, supported her husband while he was in school, and worked hard to give her child a better future. “I want to buy my son a six-story building,” she wrote.

Cho and Kim had one child together—the son who was killed. In 2021, the son started a cosmetics company that grew to 3 billion won in annual sales within three years. He was reportedly close with his mother, and the two businesses were closely connected. Kim served as a director in her son’s company, which also sold her brand’s products. The son was married to a former corporate worker and had two young children, aged nine and five.

Cho, on the other hand, lived alone in an apartment still under Kim’s name. He once ran a video rental shop but had been jobless for years with no steady income. The apartment had even been seized briefly for unpaid debts between 2009 and 2012. Neighbors said Cho often missed maintenance payments.

Experts say Cho may have long felt isolated and inferior due to financial struggles and his criminal record. Professor Lee Soo-jung, a criminal psychologist at Kyonggi University, said, “Cho likely built up anger and a sense of revenge after the divorce. His son may have become the target because he supported his mother.”

Family-related murders are on the rise in South Korea. According to the Korean National Police Agency, cases increased by 41% from 75 in 2021 to 106 in 2023. Over the same period, their share of total homicides rose from 24.4% to 36.5%.

Professor Kim Do-woo of Kyungnam University’s Department of Police Administration said, “In many cases, the perpetrators have long harbored resentment, feeling ignored or belittled by their families. Many feel their authority or identity as the head of the household has collapsed.” Police plan to deploy criminal profilers to determine Cho’s exact motive.

Korean wife has been following the story, details are:

The killer was married in the past and got caught raping a girl some 20 odd years ago. Went to prison for a year for it. Wife divorced him and took son. While he was in prison and after he got out the wife started her own health and beauty company (super dumb Korean face massaging shit Korean women are crazy about, etc).

Company blew up, became really popular and wife became really rich. Son grew up but still loved his dad so he convinced his mom to pay for a fancy apartment for his dad, who spent the years living in it terrifying the neighbors by acting like a fucking psycho. Eventually dad wanted to get back together with wife and thought he stood a chance. Shot his shot (not literally, yet). Wife rejected him.

He decided as revenge he wanted to kill her son and grandkids in front of her at the birthday party. His original plan wasn't to just kill the son, but also the grandkids, to make the ex-wife suffer. The home made gun fucked up after killing the son. He ran, tried to get home to blow himself up, failed at even that.

whatever you do with a homemade shotgun is pretty much your business. obviously it was something that mattered to you a lot.

I don't understand why they are only listing her by her surname when her story is so unique.
A minute searching got the name Kim Hyunsuk (김현숙)
She paid for his education, bought him a house and he still resented her to a murderous extent.

There's a few reasons why, the story has become controversial in Korea

1. Slander/libel laws in Korea aren't the same as America. Truth is not a defense in Korea (or Japan) against slander/libel. If they can make a case that you purposely hurt their reputation, you lose, even if you were telling the truth. This makes news companies afraid to give details about things.

2. It's now become a Uvalde school shooting situation. It's come out that the son survived for around an hour after being shot but Korean police were so afraid of the father still being in the apartment building (he wasn't, he'd left immediately) that they refused to even try to help, leaving him dying. Doctor said he probably would have survived if he'd been taken to hospital immediately. Police even called the fucking real estate agent and wanted to see the building blueprints before going in.

Can you blame that on their cowardice or Korean police bureaucracy? They're one of the most laughable police forces in the world. Basically they've got their hands tied behind the backs with pretty much anything and risk disciplinary action for not following strict procedure. Criminals rightfully treat them like the jokes they are.
